William Hypolitus Keating (1799-1840), scientist, educator, and attorney, was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1816. Having continued his studies for a time in Europe, he returned to his alma mater in 1822 as professor of mineralogy and chemistry as applied to agriculture and the arts, a position he retained until 1828. A secretary of the American Philosophical Society, 1823-27 and 1832, and councilor, 1831 and 1836-40, Keating discovered roughly ten minerals during his career. In 1823 he accompanied a United States Army expedition to explore the Minnesota and Manitoba regions, and a year later he helped found and taught chemistry at the Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts. After a four-year stint in Mexico working for a mining company, Keating returned to Philadelphia, held a seat in the state House of Representatives, 1832-34, and was admitted to the bar. He died suddenly on a business trip in London, England at age 41.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Complete 2-volume set. 8vo. Quarter grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. xiii, 458; vi, 248pp, 156pp. Frontispiece, foldout map, 7 called-for full-page plates, 3 foldout tables. Very good. Marbled paper over boards are lightly edgeworn and a tad rubbed, else internally all is tight and b…right, completely free of foxing; foldout map bears expert archival mends on verso; modern ownership signature at top of page 77 in each volume and gutter of page 111 in each volume. First British edition of this chronicle of Stephen H. Long's second expedition of the Upper Mississippi and Minnesota (then St. Peter's) Rivers, as recorded by that expedition's geologist. The soup-to-nuts goal of this significant venture: To understand militarily what protections might be needed against the British to the north; to gather a broad range of scientific data on the wildlife, plant life, geography and natural history of the region; to better understand the Native American tribes; to determine business potential such as the fur trade. Thomas W. Field summarizes the Native American aspect best: "The work is almost a cyclopaedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention, or record of the gentleman who accompanied the expedition, and their statement regarding the custom, character and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people. Much the largest portion of the volumes is devoted to recording their observations upon these Indians. Six of the plates are representations of their practices, habitations, or features." Keating (1799-1840) was an American geologist and University of Pennsylvania professor and this his best known work; in it he theorizes that a lake once existed larger than all the Great Lakes combined whose significance was understood much later. Altogether an attractive set in handsome, likely early 20th century binding. FIELD 949.GRAFF 2280. HOWES K 20. SABIN 37137.

Large folding map, 8 plates, Volume I is nearly invisibly rebacked with the original spine laid-on and the inner hinges repaired, though the inner hinge repair has added a certain stiffness to the hinge; volume two has some we…ar to the hinges. Both volumes are very good. The plates and the map have generally offset to the facing page or fold. This binding is a very early example of bookcloth, which was still in its early, even experimental, stages in 1825. The American edition was published in 1824 in Philadelphia. An important chronicle of the United States military expedition that explored the upper Mississippi and Minnesota (then known as St. Peter's) rivers in 1823. The expedition sought to collect scientific data and information on the natural history, geography, and Native American tribes of the region. Keating was the expedition's geologist and used his own notes and those of other members, including zoologist Thomas Say, and astronomer James Colhoun, in writing this book. Howes K-20.

In den WarenkorbEdition : First English Edition, Contemporary half calf with marbled boards. Spine with gilt ruling and labels with gilt titles. , The chief source of information on Stephen H. Long?s second expedition to survey the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Keating was a professor of chemistry and mining, and was chosen as the histor…ian and geologist of the expedition. Field discusses the work as ?almost a cyclopedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statements regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people? As a matter of fact, the work includes vocabularies of many Native tribes. The outstanding plates, from drawings of Samuel Seymour, were engraved by Hill. They depict scenes and Native Americans of the upper Mississippi. The map shows the Great Lakes, the Red River of the North, and the headwaters of the Mississippi, with the river?s beginnings and the complex hydrography of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the border area depicted in much finer detail than ever previously shown. Thomas Say, the famous naturalist, made all the Botanical collections on this expedition. , Size : 8vo (211x128mm). , Illustrated with frontis, folding map, and three plates in volume 1; two hand coloured plates, two plates, and three fold-out calenders in volume 2. , Volume : Two Volumes, References : Field 949, Graff 2280, Howes K20, Pilling 2066, Sabin 37137. , P. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. 2 volumes. 8vo.,(8 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Half-title. Engraved frontispiece, seven plates, including two of shells with contemporary hand-colour, and one large folding map hand-coloured in outline ". of the Country embracing the Route of the Expedition of 1823 commanded by Major S.H. Long", and three fold…ing letterpress tables (some minor and occasional spotting). Early 20th-century half ochre morocco gilt, uncut by Morrell (extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: with the 20th-century bookplates of Henry Dutton Thrall on the front paste-down of each volume. First English edition, first published in Philadelphia in 1824. "In the spring of 1823 Keating was recruited as geologist and mineralogist for an expedition formed by the War Department and commanded by Major Stephen Long. The territory to be explored included the valleys of the Minnesota and Red rivers and the country between the Red River and Lake Superior (now known as Minnesota and lower Manitoba). The party included Samuel Seymour, an artist; J. Edward Calhoun, a topographer; and Thomas Say, an entomologist. After a six-month, 4,500-mile journey, Keating returned to Philadelphia in October 1823 and prepared the expedition's notes for publication. They appeared in the fall of 1824 as Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River. This publication was widely read, and it was reprinted in London and translated into German. Although the geological observations were criticized as superficial because of the rapidity with which the party traveled, the descriptions of the Native Americans met by the group are of considerable interest" (DNB). "The work is almost a cyclopaedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention, or record of the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statement regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people" (Field). A comparative vocabulary of the Sauk, Sioux, Chippewa, and Cree tongues is given in an appendix, and one of the plates assigns musical notation for the Dog Dance of the Sioux and the Scalp Dance of the Chippewa.
