Signed presentation from Grogan on the front endpaper: To Senator Ray Dzandzel with all good wishes, Bill Grogan." , to a John Vernon Riffe [1904?1958] was an American labor unionist. Born in Jenkins, Kentucky, Riffe worked at a local coal mine from the age of 14, initially as a trapper, and then as a mule driver. He joined the United Mine Workers of America, and was elected as president of his local union when he was only 16 years old. In 1933, he was appointed as a full-time organizer for the union, based in West Virginia and then moving upward in the labor movement. Grogan was a personal friend of Riffe and his family. Raymond D. Dzendzel [1921?2018] was an American politician who was a Democratic member of both houses of the Michigan Legislature between 1955 and 1970. He had an association with the AFL-CIO. Signed.

This edition limited to 1000 copies, with 100 copies numbered and signed by William Golding, of which this is number 75. Erratum slip tipped in. Light score to the front of the slipcase. First and limited edition. Number 54 of 900 copies which were supposed to have been numbered by Golding in Roman numerals, but instead were numbered in Arabic. There were also 1,000 copies bound in quarter leather, numbered in Arabic numerals and signed by Golding. This copy is unsigned and comes with an erratum slip tipped-in at the limitation page, which explains that this is one of the 900 unsigned copies, and was mistakenly numbered "54" instead of "LIV". Octavo. Illustrated with colour photographs. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the publisher's white cloth slipcase. A fine copy in a lightly soiled slipcase.
