Leather and marbled paper are in good shape, still attractive, but not glossy and perfect. 2 bookplates on endpapers -- on the attached endpaper, "Benj. Hynam" with coat of arms including a dark skinned man. On free endpaper, "Edith de Long" with image of lion and elephants at African watering hole (dated 1930). 413 pages. Contemporary polished calf, rebacked richly gilt spine. xvi, 413pp. London, John Murray, The Colonial Office's plan to map the Niger spelt disaster for all who were commissioned with the task: Major John Peddie died of fever. His replacement, Captain Thomas Campbell, also died and was replaced by Gray and Dochard. They fared little better than their predecessors, though both managed to survive.
