In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Thus. First edition thus. Hardback in dustwrapper, in slipcase. 31 × 19cm, 326pp. Limited to 500 copies. In 1551, William Turner, the Northumbrian-born, Cambridge-educated, and ardently Protestant Dean of Wells, wrote Part I of his New Herball. This book was a landmark in both the history of botany and herbalism: for the first time physicians were able to read in their own language, English, an original study of the plants so vital to their profession. Turner's work broke new ground in its accuracy of observation and in its scientific thoroughness. Indeed, in his lifetime he was responsible for the first observation and identification of some 300 native species. It is little wonder then, that he later earned the title of 'Father of English Botany'. Turner's painstaking identification of herbs and their virtues is fascinating not only for the wealth of botanical and medical information, but also for the fastidious accuracy of his description. His lively and vivid style is not that of the dry pedant, but of a vigorous and energetic scholar, as much at home in the pastures as in the pulpit. This edition contains a facsimile of the beautiful 1551 herbal with its black-letter text and woodcut illustrations. To enable easier reading of the text, the editors have included a modernized transcript, together with keyed-in notes, and a glossary of unfamiliar or obsolete Tudor words. A short biography of Turner has also been included in order to give an idea of the contribution made by this physician, naturalist and cleric to sixteenth-century English history. Today, with the ever-increasing interest in the healing power of herbs, it seems only natural that the pioneering work of one of the greatest physicians of Tudor England should be celebrated in this reprint. Condition: Both book and slipcase are in very good condition, with just a few faint spots of foxing to the pages' top edge.…

In den WarenkorbText block a little browned & brittle, rather damp-stained in places. Uncut in orig. drab printed boards; neatly rebacked, a little dusted & rubbed. A sound copy only of a scarce book. Brandreth, 1785-1817, a Luddite stocking-maker, known as 'The Nottingham Captain', was encouraged by a government spy, William Oliver, to lead a march on Nottingham, expecting to be part of a national uprising to overthrow the government. There were 35 defendants; Brandreth, Turner, & Ludlam were convicted of High Treason. They became known as the Pentrich Martyrs as they were not only executed by hanging, but were then beheaded by axe - the last people to be so treated. On the following e.p. in a contemp. hand someone has written 'George Weightman received a reprieve'; he was in fact transported to Australia (along with several other defendants), and died there in 1865.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing. Publisher's original paper covered boards with titles in black, ruled in red to the upper board. 4to. Printed on hand made Batchelors paper by Arthur's Press Ltd. of Woodchester, Gloucester. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding ever so slightly bowed is otherwise square and tight with only a few superficial marks to the delicate paper covers. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. Other than some offsetting to the page opposite the illustrations the contents are clean and bright throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Scarce in this condition. The entire printing was limited to only 100 copies of which this is numbered 4. Compiled in the spirit and celebration of the English sense of humour amongst the blackouts, limited wireless programs, curtailed transport services and worries of war. Both the author and illustrator at the time of publication were working in the publicity department of MGM's London office. They take poems "which everyone knows - or if they don't, should know" - and rewrite and illustrate them "for more modern requirements". The Imperial War Museum in London holds the private papers of the illustrator, Squadron Leader E. G. W. Wood. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
