In a half calf binding. 16 plates including the frontispiece. Collated complete. Volume II of a six-volume compilation of accounts of famous people, strange, morbid or sensational happenings, and scientific… discoveries and inventions. Some of the subjects covered include: extraordinary animals, boiling fountains, child prodigies, dwarfs, extraordinary burials, ghosts, giants, strange murders, and prophets. Among the famous people mentioned are Mary Ann Talbot, notable for serving as a soldier in the French Revolutionary Wars; Colonel Blood, who attempted to steal the Crown Jewels; and Patrick O'Brien, one of only 22 people in medical history to stand at 8 feet tall. The work was produced by R. S. Kirby, a London bookseller, who had had worked for Alexander Hogg, publisher of the "Wonderful Magazine and Marvellous Chronicle" which appeared in parts in the late 18th century. They worked together on another "Wonderful Magazine" until Kirby allegedly purloined much of Hogg's work, producing his own "Wonderful Magazine." A lawsuit followed, but Kirby continued to publish, producing his "Kirby's Wonderful and Scientific Museum" in parts between 1803 and 1820. In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with rubbing to the spine and extremities, and bumping to both boards. The front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the odd spot and occasional offsetting to the plates; a couple of plates to the rear have tidemarks to the fore edge.
