On first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded for postage. Begins: 'My dear Sir, / Vernon Heath, of Piccadilly, has made me a photograph of our new front, which is I think fairly satisfactory.' He has told Heath to deliver a copy 'addressed to you at the R. Academy'. As it is 'rather large', he did not like to send it 'by post or Parcel', as it 'might get crushed on its way to you. Perhaps some day you may be in town with a portfolio, in which it might travel safely.'.

India paper engraving (dimensions c. 22 x 16 cms) neatly laid down on piece of wove paper c. 29 x 22 cms. Very good, with the slightest spotting, and with minor creasing and staining to the extremities of the mount. A pensive Murray sits in an armchair, reading a manuscript.

He can only write his thanks, having been overwhelmed by 'the arrears of work that followed my illness', and leaving for Paris the following day.

8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. On stationery with embossed address. To friends, negotiating the sale of his mother's art collection of proofs (unpublished art prints) by J. M. W. Turner. Cooke's mother was offering an almost complete set of 38 proofs after Turner on French paper, together with additional miscellaneous prints: "A set of Unlettered Southern coast proofs on French paper (rare not having been published) & also 17 proofs & prints after Turner & which she would also part with, the whole for £100. There are seven wanting in the set, two of which are only vignettes & one plate Clovelly is not on French paper. There are however 38 proofs among them after Turner & very fine impressions [.]". Among the 17 added proofs are six finished specimens, of which one is very valuable ("on very large paper Florence is one which bears a high value - an ordinary proof having brought at a sale five guineas"). Cooke stresses that he will not lower the price of £100. - E. W. Cooke was an English painter of landscapes and marine scenes. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution in 1835. Aside from his work as a painter, Cooke was involved in natural history, geology, and gardening, and was elected as a fellow of the The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge in 1863.

Hand written number 12 of 75 Limited Edition copies with original coloured lithograph SIGNED by the artist Frank Brangwyn. Brick red and black printed title with 20 colour plates after paintings by Frank Brangwyn, printed brick red vignettes in margins, headers and tail pieces. The merest hint of spotting to a couple of sheets and in Very Good clean and bright condition without any of the usual browning to the covers. First edition De Luxe hard back binding in publisher's original quarter vellum backed brown boards, black lettering panel to the spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, decorated end sheets. 4to. 10½'' x 8¼''. pp. [viii], 9-126, printed on fine hand-made paper; strikingly illustrated with a total of 16 fine coloured lithographs alongside historiated initials and other decorations in line and 2 additional colour printed woodcut plates printed by Y. Urushibara after designs by Brangwyn, of which one is SIGNED in pencil by the artist 'Frank Brangwyn'. Limited to only 75 copies for the English and American markets, this copy unnumbered. 2pp., 4to. Aged and creased, mounted in windowpane on leaf removed from album. Liscard Hall was built for the former Mayor of Liverpool and slave-ship captain Sir John Tobin. Allen writes that since arriving there he has 'painted too little subjects', and that he has 'a wish' to 'leave them behind me - but not unframed - size of Pictures 16in: x 12in:' If Cobbett does not have 'two tolerable frames of that size' he asks him to order two: 'I do not require the "best double distilled - extra hyper - superfine" - but something tolerably good looking'. He asks for letters to be addressed to him at 'Mr W. Bright's| 11 Covent Garden | Liverpool'. He complains that he has made few sketches, as the weather has been 'either wet or blazing hot in this neighbourhood'. He concludes: 'I want to start for the north of Yorkshire but am desirous of seeing these things finished in their frames before I am off'.

On India paper roughly three and a half inches by six and a half wide, mounted on a thick piece of wove paper ten inches by fourteen and a half. Cooke's name is engraved on the illustration, and printed on the mount are the title, Lewis's name and a double ruled border. Good clear impression. The mount is a tad grubby, with foxing to the extremities. Atmospheric representation of a populated pier snaking to the left, with a number of sailing ships and a row boat taking advantage of the low tide nearby. No reference found. Image on request.
