A collection of biographical sketches of various royal, political and military leaders of various countries of Europe, looking at important former leaders, as well as those contemporary to the time of writing. This includes Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Robert Peel, The Emporer Alexander I, Count Orloff, King Victor Emmanuel, Count de Cavour, the Shah of Persia, etc. GOOD+ condition. Minor fading. Moderate scuffing to the leather along the spine, hinges and extremities. Small tear, with creasing to the leather at the tale of the spine. Owner's bookplate present. Minor scattered foxing in the interior.

The text illustrations are abundant and dramatic, while the dozens of heavy stock, tissue-guarded plates are superb. EXCEPTIONALLY FINE original publishers' binding of brown morocco, each cover elaborated decorated with a black stamped floral border surrounding a central gilt blocked artist's palette and title, the spines in five compartments, gilt-lettered in two, the others ruled in black and decorated with black losenge tools, gilt edges and inner dentelles, all edges gilt (head and foot of the spine just touched). Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 42. A virtually mint copy of this spectacular pictorial record of America. "'Picturesque America' was a conspicuous presence in the popular culture of the United States in the post-Civil War years. First published as a magazine series in Appletons' Journal, then as a subscription book, in parts, from 1872 to 1874 it reached a huge audience. Its voluminous text and over 900 pictures represented the first comprehensive celebration of the entire continental nation. By testifying to the variety, uniqueness and potential wealth of the American landscape and the advanced civilization of its cities, 'Picturesque America' laid the foundation for a resurgence of nationalism rooted in the homeland itself, rather than in institutions of democracy as would have been the case earlier in the century" (Sue Rainey, Introduction to "Creating picturesque America: monument to the natural and cultural landscape"). Full black sheepskin leather with gilt lettering to upper cover and backstrip, backstrip lightly stained and scuffed, slipcase slightly faded and with some scuffs, internally a fine copy. ? Copy #666 of 1500 copies, signed by Nason, a New England artist best known for his illustrations of Robert Frost but a perfect choice here for the poems of the great New England Romantic, William Cullen Bryant.

Zustand: Very Good. Original three-quarter calf, pebbled cloth. All edges gilt. Forty-seven engraved plates and two added engraved title pages. Covers a bit scuffed; bookplate and ownership notation in each volume; light foxing, mainly in margins. In vol. 1, two nicks in cover edges, small tear in rear cover.

"Our Fellow-Worshippers": "Deem not that thou and I / Are here the only worshippers today / Beneath this glorious sky / Mid the soft airs that o'er the meadows play / These airs, whose breathing stirs / The fresh grass, are our fellow-worshippers [.]". - According to Henry C. Sturges, the poem was written in December 1875 at Bryant's home in Roslyn, Long Island (The Poetical Works of William Cullen Bryant, p. LXXVI). It belongs to the last period of the poet's work, written less than three years before his death. - With some corrections by the author, slightly smudged, some insignificant foxing to recto.
