ESTC N22301, Cambridge, Oxford; California State Library. Number 8, part 3 of…a set for the sessions of 1742-43; containing the trial of William Chetwynd. Chetwynd, age about 15, stabbed and killed Thomas Ricketts age 19, fellow pupil at Mr Clare's Academy in Soho Square, because Ricketts removed, seemingly as a joke, a piece of Chetwynd's cake. This report ends with an agreed statement of the facts for later resolution; in consequence of this special verdict the case was argued before the twelve judges, who deemed Chetwynd to have been guilty of manslaughter only; whereupon he was set at liberty, after being burned in the hand.

Chetwynd, who was about fifteen years old, stabbed his schoolmate with his pocket knife when the other boy tried to take a piece of his cake. The trial hinged on whether this constituted murder or manslaughter under common law; the jury could not decide and referred the matter to the judges. Chetwynd was eventually convicted of manslaughter and burned on the hand. This account includes an appendix with summaries of six cases cited in the Chetwynd trial.
