Facsimile edition of second edition published in 1489, of which the only known copy is in the Pepys Library at Cambridge. 8vo, unpaginated pp142 + frontispiece portrait of Pepys with a four page brief history of the edition by J. A. W. Bennett, Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Eng…lish in the University of Cambridge to rear. Hardcover issued without dust jacket in slipcase. Slipcase of brown paper covered boards with blue felt and silk ribbon within in poor condition split on top and side, however it has done it's job of protecting the apparently one off binding. Full light brown calf binding with tooled gilt flowers tipped in green to both boards and 5 raised bands and leather title label to spine in very good condition with only a few small marks and slight rubbing to side of spine. Inside all pages with top edge gilt in beautiful near fine unread condition. An excellent one off copy of the facsimile of the William Caxton printed "The Historie of Reynart the Foxe" which was translated from Van den vos Reynaerde in 1481.

William Caxton (c. 1421 - 1491) was an English merchant, diplomat, and writer. He is thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England, in 1476, and as a printer was the first English retailer of printed books. [Hans Peter Kraus (October 12, 1907 - November 1, 1988), also known as H. P. Kraus or HPK, was an Austrian-born book dealer described as "without doubt the most successful and dominant rare book dealer in the world in the second half of the 20th century"].

In den WarenkorbTwo pages, 12mo, chipped and with small closed tears, with loss of half a line of text and some letters, bottom edge turned up, aging. "I beg to offer you according to your reque[st] a list of books printed by Caxton, in the library at Ashburnham House with their imperfections and sizes. | I have taken the liber[ty] to send also… such not[es] [half line lost] will I thi[nk] apply to the particular copies under description[.] Certainty is often difficult to arrive at, and should your lordship incline to favour me with any corrections or emendations in the accompanying notes, they will be greatly esteemed and carefully noted by . . . ". WITH: The notes in Blades' hand referred to in this letter, 3pp., 12mo, bifolium, chipped, sunned and turned edges, etc, minor losses, signed "William Blades | 21/4/58", commencing, "The Book of divers ghost[ly matters printed by Caxton in 4to consists of three separate tracts meant evidently to be bound in one volume, but with the signatures arranged . . . " He goes on to list the three titles, and then lists the libraries which hold them (Cambridge Public Library, Althorpe, Ham House, Durham, giving information about the copies, including condition and sale price. He adds that there is a copy for sale, 2nd tract only, in perfect condition and modern binding. He concludes that "The above are the only copies I have seen." Note: (Quaritch, "Book Collectors", "[Ashburnham's] series of books from the press of Caxton he reckoned as second only to that at Althorp among private libraries.".
