Cabe mencionar como sobresaliente su trabajo pionero en el campo de la microcirugía de laringe para restaurar y mejorar la función vocal, hoy conocida como fonocirugía, término acuñado por el propio Hans von Leden junto con Gottfried Arnold en 1963. En 1961, von Leden y su esposa, Mary Louise, se mudaron a Los Ángeles, donde se convirtió en profesor en la Facultad de Medicina de UCLA y abrió su Instituto de Laringología y Trastornos de la Voz. En 1966, asumió la Cátedra de Biocomunicación en la Universidad del Sur de California en Los Ángeles.
