Hardcover. New & cheaper. vii, 332 p.; 20.5 cm. [First printed in 1911: illustrations omitted in this reprint] `There are shops where once I went which now see me no more, for I have been driven away by the obsequious obtrusiveness of such irrepressible interrupters of one's peace. Not that the shopmen of new-book shops are all of this type--far from it. There are some excellent, intelligent and understanding men who take pains, know how to be silent, and get what you want with cheerful appreciation. My picture is, however, drawn from experience, and, as a rule, to go from the new-book shop to the old is a step from storm to stillness. My love for the old-book shop is the same as my love for a library, and this dates probably from my early associations.' (p. 127 f.) -- One Sunday during Morning Prayer the skylight showed a chimney next door catching fire, and panic ensued. `Selfish cowardice showed itself in the deliberation with which a young man picked up his hat, coat, and umbrella, and stole quietly out the the pew and out of the church, leaving two or three ladies who occupied the same pew to look after themselves. Sheer superstitious panic showed itself when a lady flung herself into the vicar's pew in a sort of vague belief that, if harm fell elsewhere, it would pass over the clergyman's lot. When the smoke began to curl across the ceiling (the Litany, be it remembered, was being read) the man said to his wife: "My dear, the church is on fire." The wife replied, "Nonsense, my dear," and then, devoutly going on with the responses: "Good Lord, deliver us." (p. 322 f.) Good orig. green cloth, spine and edges heavily abraded.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. He begins by apologising for being unable to give any information regarding Shettle, who 'only came into Ripon Diocese in 1911, theh year in which I resigned'. He is unacquainted with Shettle's books, none of which are credited to him in Crockford's. He agrees with Lang's 'letter & notes on Church & Education matters': 'the War is constantly disclosing how far astray our Education & Church method has been. No high spiritual ideals have been fully & widely recognised in our schools & our churches have been used too often as nurseries of narrow & pedantic theology or as political hotbeds'. William Robert Lang, the probable recipient, was born in Scotland and educated at the University of Glasgow. He became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toronto and took an active part in the First World War. He was a member of the Canadian General Staff and commanded the University of Toronto contingent of the Canadian Officers Training Corps.
