Hardcover. Zustand: g to vg. Limited First edition. 1/1000. Quarto. XII, [1], 347, [1], VIII, [2], 386, [2]pp. Uncut and unopened copy. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth, with gold lettering to spines and front covers. Top edges gilt. Pictorial endpapers showing maps of Biblical periods. Color frontispiece and title vignette in each volume. From the author in her Preface: "The Bible is a difficult study, and many, in youth, are bewildered and turn aside for lack of guidance. Here, I have endeavored to select those parts which might properly become a child's first sacred book. In the first volume, the story of the Creation and verses describing and praising its wonders are followed by the lives of great heroes of old who sought to know God and to do his will. [.] The second volume opens with the Life of Jesus, made one account from the four gospels that he may be seen more vividly. The parables and the discourse of Jesus at the Last Supper are printed in italics to set them apart from the narrative. [.] I have taken many liberties with the Letters of Paul, selecting those passages which to me seem timeless, and arranging them by subject. This, it is hoped, will lead to a closer study of the epistles themselves. Many of the Psalms are here, arranged as hymns of praise and worship, psalms of reflection, and personal confession of faith. For those who are older, I have placed together the more philosophical and preceptual books, including Job, [.], and Jonah [.]. The commandments of Moses and of Jesus are repeated, as are God's covenants with his people." Binding of first volume is slightly age-toned on spine, and partly discolored on front cover (thus partly affecting gold lettering). Binding of first volume in overall good- to good, interior, binding and interior of second volume in very good condition.

John Milton's Comus: A Mask, first performed in 1634, is a poetic allegory exploring virtue, temptation, and the battle between good and evil. The narrative follows a young woman and her brothers, who are lured by Comus, a sorcerer, into the forest. The work emphasizes the triumph of chastity and reason over debauchery and corruption. This 1926 limited edition, published by Julian Editions and Ernest Benn, is notable for its stunning illustrations by William Blake. Blake's engravings, renowned for their mystical quality, complement Milton's themes, bringing the allegory to life with vivid, visionary imagery. His artwork, imbued with a sense of the supernatural, deepens the moral struggle depicted in the text. This edition offers a unique visual and literary experience, enhancing Milton's work with Blake's signature style, and remains an important contribution to the legacy of both poets. Subjects: Allegory, Masque, Purity, Temptation, Blake's Illustrations, Milton's Works, Poetry, Art, Literature.

The Book of Thel is a poem by William Blake, dated 1789 and probably composed in the period 1788 to 1790. It is illustrated by his own plates, and is relatively short and easy to understand, compared to his later prophetic books. The metre is a fourteen-syllable line. It was preceded by Tiriel, which Blake left in manuscript. A few lines from Tiriel were incorporated into The Book of Thel. Most of the poem is in unrhymed verse. William Blake (1757 1827) was a British poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. Blake proclaimed the supremacy of the imagination over the rationalism and materialism of the 18th-century. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. Charles de Sousy Ricketts RA (2 October 1866 7 October 1931) was a British artist, illustrator, author and printer, known for his work as a book designer and typographer and for his costume and scenery designs for plays and operas.
