Zustand: good, very good. 332, illus., maps, notes, glossary, bibliography, index, DJ in plastic sleeve, marginal pencil marks on a few pages. This book was originally published, in Russian, in 1946. This translation is largely based on the Third Edition (originally published in 1959), and represents an amalgam of the First and Third Editions. An account of the first modern attempt at a systematic survey of the arctic waters north of Siberia. The author served as medical officer aboard the Imperial Russian Navy icebreaker Taymyr throughout the voyages. In his discovery of a pronounced anti-American element in later editions of the original work, the editor has provided an interesting sidelight on the influence of the Cold War upon the literature of the Arctic.
