An account of the first modern attempt at a systematic survey of the arctic waters north of Siberia. The author served as medical officer aboard the Imperial Russian Navy icebreaker Taymyr throughout the voyages. In his discovery of a pronounced anti-American element in later editions of the original work, the editor has provided an interesting sidelight on the influence of the Cold War upon the literature of the Arctic.
