Invitation sent to Edwin L Tilley of Wolfeboro, MA from John H. Nealley, Recorder of the Dover, New Hampshire order of the Knights Templar. Officers to be installed listed in author field. Various prominent members of Dover, New Hampshire are listed. Three members of which would go on to become mayors of Dover, B. Frank Nealley, 1889-90, Alonzo M. Foss, 1893-95, and John H. Nealley, 1904-05. Sir Oliver Gibbs and George P. Demeritt where both Union 2nd Lieutenants during the Civil War. Most, if not all, of the other members listed served in various areas of local government. Although not confirmed, George L. Johnson is possibly the Lumberman who founded the short lived lumber town of Johnson, NH in the early 1900's.

Decoratively printed thick boards with black linen spine, printed paper label to spine (as issued), decorative end-papers, 262pp plus publishers ads at rear. This copy belonged to Maynard Mayo Metcalf and has his unusual decorative bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper and his ink signature (dated Jan 1904) on the half title leaf. Metcalf was an active part of the defence team in the Scopes 'Monkey Trial' of 1925 (Scopes was charged with teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law). Metcalf worked closely with Clarence Darrow in Scopes defence and was the only scientist allowed to give evidence at the trial . [CONDITION: The book is an extremely well preserved FINE very clean and tight unmarked copy (pages very slightly tanned) ] . . . Slim octavo (21cm); letterpress printed sheets, sewn into grey handmade paper wrappers, with title label mounted to front cover; [ii],[2],3-22,[4]pp. Hint of sunning to spine, with some trivial external wear; contents fresh; very Near Fine. The text of Goldsmith's poem, edited by William Todd from the 1764 proof sheets discovered in 1902 by Bertram Dobell in the British Museum. The poem was published as "The Traveller" in 1765. An elegant little volume, with no copies found in the trade (as of January, 2025), and 10 copies held by OCLC institutions.

A bound volume of different 'Lady's' magazines, containing the bound volume of July through December 1843 of the Ladie's National Magazine, as well as various single issues of Godey's Lady's Book (March 1844 and February 1845) and Graham's Magazine (January and November of 1844). These are not bound consecutively but appear after volume IV of the Ladies' National Magazine. With various plates, including several color fashion plates included with the Ladies' Magazine and Godey's Book. NO original wraps or ads included with any issue. Two plates MISSING from the Ladies' National Magazine, although all fashion plates are present, some misbound. 3 fashion plates not colored although indicated that they should be in the contents. Of note in the various volumes is 'The Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade,' by Edgar Allan Poe (Godey's Lady's Book, February 1845); "The Lady's Yes" by Elizabeth B. Barrett (Browning) [Graham's Magazine January 1844]; 'Terpsichore' by Oliver Wendell Holmes in the same issue; and a poem by Henry William Herbert. The November 1844 issue of Graham's contains a brief article on an Elkhorn Pyramid on the Upper Missouri, with a plate included. With fashion plates included for the various Godey's Lady's Books. POOR/FAIR condition. Leather backstrip effectively DETACHED, with the lower 3 inches MISSING. Covers very weakly attached. The first few leaves of the book tenuously hanging on by a thread. Two leaves of illustrations DETACHED and laid in at the middle of the book. Moderate scuffing and general fading to the boards, with some soiling. Extremities scuffed and worn. Scattered foxing, soiling and staining throughout the interior, moderate to heavy in a few places. Text block shaken but intact, except for the above noted sections.
