Benchmark calculations suggest that its most commonly-used variant, 'fixed-node' diffusion Monte Carlo, estimates energies with an accuracy comparable to that of high-level coupled-cluster calculations. These two methods, each having advantages and disadvantages, are complementary 'gold-standards' of quantum chemistry.There are challenges facing researchers in the field, several of which are addressed in the chapters in this monograph. These include improving the accuracy and precision of quantum Monte Carlo calculations; understanding the exchange nodes and utilizing the simulated electron distribution; extending the method to large and/or experimentally-challenging systems; and developing hybrid molecular mechanics/dynamics and Monte Carlo algorithms.

Firenze, [s.n.], 1930, acquarello su cartoncino, mm. 378x508. Firmato dall'artista in basso a destra. Al verso annotazione manoscritta: "Arno at Firenze 1930". Sgualciture e qualche traccia di piegatura. William Lester Stevens iniziò la sua formazione artistica prendendo lezioni da Parker Perkins, un pittore marino nella sua città natale di Rockport. Trascorse poi quattro anni alla Museum of Fine Arts School di Boston, sotto la guida di Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, Philip Hale e William Paxton. Dopo un periodo di servizio militare e un'ulteriore formazione artistica in Europa, Stevens iniziò a insegnare; prima a Rockport poi alla Boston University e a Princeton. Il suo lavoro fu particolarmente apprezzato nel sud degli Stati Uniti. Stevens era fanaticamente devoto alla pittura e come tale fu estremamente prolifico. I suoi primi lavori sono caratterizzati da una pittura ad olio densa e impastata, ma più avanti nella sua carriera tese maggiormente verso colori traslucidi ottenuti con acrilici o acquerelli.
