Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo., (8 ¼ x 5 ¼ inches). (Upper corner of title page renewed). Modern quarter brown morocco, brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First edition. This pamphlet is a "sequel" to a pamphlet published the previous year entitled "A Brief State of Pennsylvania," which was an "attack on the Quakers for their policy in Assembly of refusing support to plans for the defense of the Province, and accusing them of influencing the ignorant German vote by improper means. The remedy suggested is the forcing of all members of the Assembly to take the oath of allegiance to the king, and disenfranchising the Germans until they should understand the language and constitution of the Province. Means of bringing about this education are outlined" (Sabin). In this new publication, "Smith lashes out against the principles and actions of the Quakers and the Popular Party, whom he characterizes as 'a factious Cabal, effectually promoting the French Interest, and a dead Weight upon his Majesty's Service'" (Siebert). An intriguing look at the politics of pre-Revolutionary America from the perspective of the "wrong" side of history.…

Hardcover. 1st Edition. 12mo., (6 3/8 x 4 inches). Fine engraved folding map: "Carte de la Pensilvanie," woodcut head-and tailpiece. Contemporary German half sheep and plain parchment boards, printed paper label on the spine (a little rubbed). Provenance: Engraved armorial bookplate of the Counts Goertz on the front paste-down, and 19th-century ink library stamp of the title-page. First edition and a FINE AND ATTRACTIVE COPY. An abridgement of William Smith's "Brief View of the Conduct of Pennsylvania, for the year 1755", published the same year in London, soon after the official outbreak of the French and Indian War. This French translation, attributed to the Abbe de la Ville by Sabin, was published in late August or September of 1756, with a view to obtaining French support for the struggle against the English in North America. The Pennsylvanian colonists are portrayed as helpless and vulnerable to hostile native attacks, in spite of the efforts of Benjamin Franklin to build forts and raise troops and funding for the army of General Braddock, commander in chief of the British forces in America. La Ville's extract from Smith occupies only the central portion of the book, being prefaced by a brief description of the geography and populations of the Pennsylvania colony (pages 7-20), and followed by an account of the vents that took place in Pennsylvania from the defeat and death of General Braddock in 1755 to the end of August 1756 (pages 81-108). The volume concludes with a French translation of an Act of November 25, 1755, passed by the Pennsylvania Assembly, for "imposing order. on those inhabitants of Pennsylvania who wish to become together as a militia". Howes, page 216; Streeter sale 2:960; Sabin 19370. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12mo. pp. 128. folding engraved map. woodcut ornaments & initials. modern quarter morocco. First Edition of the French Translation of Smith s Brief View of the Conduct of Pennsylvania (1756). The abridgement of Smith s text, and the substantial additions made by the translator De La Ville actually render this quite a different work, and it is only listed under Smith s name in one of the bibliographies consulted (TPL). Streeter remarks that it was probably published with the intention of bolstering public enthusiasm in France over the progress of the struggle with the English in North America following the defeat of Braddock and Montcalm s capture of Oswego. Smith s text, pp. 21-80, outlines the Indian atrocities committed on the frontier settlements of Pennsylvania in October and November, 1755, and stresses the colony s helplessness in repulsing the French and their Indian allies. De La Ville has appended further remarks ( Relation contenant la suite de ce qui s est passé en Pensilvanie ) and a translation of an act for the establishment of a Pennsylvania militia, and prefixed a brief description of Pennsylvania, which is accompanied by a map. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. xvi, 147, [10]. complete with half-title. 3 folding engraved maps & plans by Thomas Hutchins, folding engraved plate of troop formations & 2 engraved plates after Benjamin West (1 partly hand-coloured). 19th century half calf (spine & corners worn, hole in blank portion of half-title repaired). First Edition of the French Translation by C.G.F. Dumas of this account of Colonel Henry Bouquet's decisive campaign of 1763-64 in the Ohio region, which put an end to Pontiac's conspiracy. The work was originally published at Philadelphia in 1764, and then at London the following year. Appearing here for the first time is a brief prefatory biography of Bouquet written by the translator; according to the DAB, this is the sole authority for Bouquet's European career. Although long believed to have been written by Thomas Hutchins, who accompanied the expedition and executed the engraved plans, it is now established that this account was prepared by Provost Smith from Bouquet's notes at his request. Bouquet came to North America in 1756, where he proved himself to be a brilliant commander, serving largely on the western frontier, and quickly adapting himself and his troops to the exigencies of wilderness warfare. In 1763 he marched a small army of Royal Americans and Highlanders to relieve Fort Pitt in the Ohio region, repulsing a group of Delawares and Shawnees at Edgehill, and crushing an Indian attack at Bushy Run. The following year he commanded the southern of two expeditions sent to pacify the Indians. Leading a small force of provincials and regulars to the forks of the Muskingum, he succeeded in forcing the surrender of all prisoners in Indian hands and concluded a general peace, thus ending the conspiracy of Pontiac. In recognition of his services, he was publicly thanked by the King and by the assemblies of the southern provinces, awarded the rank of brigadier, and given command of the southern district. The plates include a map of the Ohio region, showing the course of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers and the positions of the Indian villages relative to the army of Colonel Bouquet, a plan of the battle of Bushy Run, a map showing the route of Bouquet's march across the Indian territory in 1764, a plate of troop formations, and two engravings after Benjamin West, which originally appeared in the London edition of 1766, one representing the conference between Bouquet and the Indians in October 1764, the other showing the English captives being returned by the Indians to Colonel Bouquet in November 1764. 8vo, 19.6cm, The First Edition in French. xvi,147, [1] (Instructions to the Binder), [9] (Table des Matieres), with 2 engraved plates and 4 engraved folding maps and plans; one plan and several military routes included in the text; pp. [vi & vii] misnumbered vii & viii, contemporary full mottled calf, ornately gilt decorated spine panels with crushed crimson morocco label gilt, original marbled endpapers, all edges dyed red in the style of the day, a fine clean copy in contemporary binding, complete with half-title. (cgc). Howes S701. Sabin 84647. Field 1443. The first edition was published in Philadelphia in 1765; this translation, by C. G. F. Dumas, is from the first London edition of 1766; the plates are after those, also in the London edition, by Benjamin West. This is the first edition to include a biography of Bouquet, whose expedition in 1 763 to relieve Fort Pitt from the siege of Shawnees, Delawares and other Indian tribes was an indication of England's strength in the Ohio Valley at the close of the Seven Years' War [the French and Indian War in North America]. He was, however, unable to follow up his victory at Bushy Run due to lack of men and the depredations by the Indians continued. In 1 764 General Gage dispatched him again and this time he was able to force treaties of peace upon the tribes and was successful in obtaining the release of prisoners. "This campaign gave Pontiac's conspiracy its death-blow. " -(Howes).…

8vo. pp. 88. disbound. First Edition. A sequel to Smith's Brief State of the Province of Pennsylvania (1755), in which he defends his position against published criticisms and continues his attack on the Quakers for their policy in the Assembly of refusing support to plans for the defence of the Province: "Before I conclude, I shall fully prove against the Assembly, that it is not Libelling of them, to say that they are a factious Cabal, effectually promoting the French Interest, and a dead weight upon his Majesty's Service. This, and every other Charge which is brought against them in the Brief State, I shall support with fresh and undeniable Evidence." (p. 9) Smith goes on to relate the Indian atrocities committed on the frontier settlements in October and November of 1755, the defeat of Braddock's expedition and Montcalm's capture of Oswego, and stresses the colony's helplessness in repulsing the French and their Indian allies.
