The work of irrigation engineer Sir William Willcocks, a British civil engineer during the high point of the British Empire who proposed and built the first Aswan Dam, a gravity masonry buttress on the Nile River. This was published three months before Willcocks' death, and, addressed to 'His Excellency The Minister of Public Works', discusses water storage and drainage in Egypt under British colonial rule, in the region of the Wadi El Rayan, a vast area of lakes and sulphur springs.From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan, and with his contemporary inscription to the head of the front wraps, dated 1932. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Wraps age toned to perimeters due to paper type, with contemporary inscription to head of front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Reprint in the Smithsonian's original printed wraps with separate title page (not a disbound article) 16 x 25cm. 16pp (401-416) + 4 Plates (containing 7 b/w photos) + colour folding map of the Tigris Euphrates Delta 35 x 30cm as called for. Covers very good, creased to the edges. Text pages near fine, lightly tanned, uncut to the top edges. The plates only are damp stained to their fore-edge suggesting this occurred before binding. The map is neatly folded with some creasing. This contains Willcocks' presentation to the Royal Geographical Society in London on 15 November 1909, reprinted with permission from the Geographical Journal (Vol 35, No.1, Jan 1910). Willcocks had been appointed by the new Turkish Government to engage engineers and survey and level the rivers and canals of the Tigris-Euphrates Delta, and devise projects for the rehabilitation of the country. Willcocks' descriptions include historical context. The photos are of Ctesiphon, Babylon, Baghdad, Basra Creek, and "unirrigated Mesopotamia".

An irrigation engineer, Willcocks proposed and built the first Aswan Dam, which is the subject of this work. With five folding plates. Collated, complete. Multi-lingual, with the initial work in English followed by a French translation and an Arabic Translation. This work discusses Willcocks' decision to build the first Aswan Dam, a gravity masonry buttress on the Nile River. Nothing of this scale had been attempted let alone built before this, and at the time of completion it was the largest masonry dam in the world. It was also the first true storage reservoir on the river. Willcocks originally delivered this work as a lecture at a meeting of the Khedivial Geographical Society, Cairo on the 16th January 1904. In the publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Light rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Stamp to the recto of front endpaper and to the title page, R and R Limited. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Just the odd spots. Very Good Indeed. book.
