Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: for John Bowles & Son, by Benj. Wilkes, June 15, 1742. Folio (18 1/ 2" x 12", 472mm x 300mm) First edition. With engraved title and 12 uncoloured engraved plates by H. Roberts after B. Wilkes, 1741-42. Unbound leaves as issued, housed in green half cloth over marbled paper boards portfolio with green cloth ties. Title browned and torn with some loss and tape to verso. Plates with stab holes at top, some stains and foxing. Plate 12 torn and chipped with some loss. These plates were probably sold at Wilkes market stall, either singly or in sets of 12. The plates are composed for decorative rather than didactic effect with the butterflies arranged in geometric patterns. Bemjamin Wilkes (fl. 1742) was an English artist and naturalist. At the bottom of each plate, Wilkes describes the time of emergence, host plants and occurrance of the caterpillar. He was assisted by noted naturalist Joseph Dandridge, spending his leisure time collecting, studying and illustrating moths and butterflies. Wilkes studied lepidoptery as a member of the Aurelian Society, a famous group of zoologists.

In den WarenkorbThird edition of a ground-breaking entomological colour-plate book, with 120 engraved and beautifully hand-coloured illustration plates showing not only the moths and butterflies, but also the plants that host them, first published and sold by the author himself in 1749, apparently a week before his death (a second edition appeared in 1773). From a young age, Benjamin Wilkes (ca. 1720?-1749) was a member of the Aurelian Society, which eventually evolved into the Royal Entomological Society. Wilkes himself published and sold the first edition of the book The English moths and butterflies, and commissioned the colourist, and the present edition was beautifully coloured for the publisher. The book's title places significant emphasis on the plates' colouration, and the artist's execution of the coloration suggests an accomplished colourist, likely affiliated with the publisher. To illustrate the book, Wilkes engaged the celebrated botanical artists Georg Dionysius Ehret and Jacob van Huysum, even though it is curious that they worked on a book about moths and butterflies, at a time when there was no comparable tradition of entomological illustration. As a result, the plates sometimes feature overwhelming botanical elements. Wilkes took care to detail the relationships between insects and specific plants in his text.In 18th-century London, Benjamin Wilkes was known as both an artist and a naturalist. He primarily painted historical scenes and portraits in oil paints. However, after attending a meeting of the Aurelian Society at the invitation of a friend, he became enamoured of the study of butterflies and moths. He felt that nature would be his best teacher in terms of colour and form in art. As a result, he began to dedicate his free time to collecting, studying and drawing the various life stages of Lepidoptera (adults, larvae, pupae, and parasitoids such as Tachinidae and Ichneumonidae), often with the assistance of the collector Joseph Dandridge. Wilkes kept his own collection of insects on display "against the Horn Tavern in Fleet Street," London, making it accessible to any interested individual. Sadly, Henry Baker reported in August 1749 that Wilkes died due to a fever only a week after completing his extensive and beautiful work. Despite being highly observant and meticulous in his note-taking, Wilkes lacked formal education and was therefore unable to write a book about his findings. Nonetheless, Baker praised him as an "indefatigable" researcher who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his work. Some wear to binding, book block partly detached and slight foxing and browning throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Freeman, 3998; Lisney, 106/186; Nissen, ZBI 4410a, WorldCat 12638205. Mid-19th-century half gold-tooled dark green morocco, nonpareil-marbled sides, gilt edges, stored in a simple paperboard slipcase. With 120 engraved plates (mainly 27.5 x 22.5 cm) hand-coloured for the author. Pages: VIII, [22], 63, [5] pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. First. THE AUTHOR'S COPY? First edition. London: Printed for, and Sold by Benjamin Wilkes, [1747-1749]. Pot folio (12 1/4" x 10 3/16", 312mm x 259mm). [Full collation available.] With 120 hand-colored engraved plates. Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf (rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down). On the boards, gilt roll border around a double gilt fillet border around two blind roll borders. On the spine, six raised bands with a gilt roll. In the panels, triple gilt fillet border around gilt bees (moths?) in the corners and gilt birds at a fountain in the center. Title gilt to green morocco in the second panel. Gilt roll to the ends of the boards. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block sprinkled red. Rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down (perished at the head). Fore-corners bumped and worn. Wear to the extremities. Hinges cracked, but still solid. Closed tear to the lower edge of the title-page. Upper fore-corner of p. 19-20 lost, without affecting text. Text and plates good and bright. With early ink numeration to the text and plates. Armorial bookplate of Dogmersfield Library on the front paste-down. Small shelf-label (?) to the upper fore-corner of the front paste-down. Ink shelfmark to the upper fore-corner of the verso of the first free end-paper. Early pencil notation on the upper edge of the same page: "This was the Authors own copy & bot at the sale of his Books by J.C." Effaced ink inscription at the upper edge of the title-page. Presented in a velvet-lined clamshell box. Benjamin Wilkes (d. 1749) was from a young age a member of the Aurelian Society (aurelia being the Latin for chrysalis), which, after many iterations, would go on to be the kernel of the Royal Entomological Society. His access to (mounted) specimens gives the coloring in particular an extraordinary accuracy and verisimilitude. The title places great emphasis on the coloration of the plates, and the flowing and ebullient execution of the coloration suggests a colorist in command of her art, and likely closely affiliated with the Wilkes. The coloring of the present copy is subtle and very fine indeed. This edition was issued in (four?) parts between 1747 and 1749. Wilkes (is said to have) died a week after its publication, and so it makes acceptance of the attribution as his own copy slightly difficult, though not impossible. That said, there is no particular reason to disbelieve the claim. Wilkes engaged two of the most celebrated botanical artists of the XVIIIc, Georg Dionysius Ehret and Jacob van Huysum, to carry out the illustrations. It is curious that they should work on a book of moths and butterflies, but there is no comparable tradition of entomological illustration at this period. This would account for the prominence -- indeed sometimes the overwhelming prominence -- of botanical elements in the plates. Wilkes in his text is careful to detail the relationships between insects and specific plants. The bookplate is that of the St. John-Mildmay baronets; their library was dispersed at a 1907 Sotheby's sale. Based on the style of the bookplate, perhaps this volume belonged to Sir Henry St John Carew St John-Mildmay, fourth baronet (1787-1848). It is unclear who the purchaser of the book from the author's sale -- "J.C." -- might have been. Engelmann p. 557, Hagen p. 289, Lisney 185, Nissen ZBI 4410.

Dame Selina Mary Knightley (née Hervey, 1781-1856) was the wife of Sir Charles Knightley Bt. and mother of Sir Rainald, both conservative MPs for Northamptonshire. Her will (PROB 11/2246/157) makes clear that she was a woman of considerable means; other books of hers have come to market, although generally with the bookplates of her husband or son attached. This volume might therefore have been a personal favorite. Engelmann p. 557, Hagen p. 289, Lisney 185-7, Nissen ZBI 4410a.
