Original boxed portfolio, protected in modern mylar. Five series of ink drawings on 22 plates (19.5 x 14.5") by Ulfert Wilke printed by Kuroyama Collotype Print Co. "One of the few foreign painters (Wilke) who have discovered and come to grasp the singular world of "sumi" (Chinese ink painting) is Ulfert Wilke. The fluidity of tone, the splash and splotch, the variety an depth of blackness, the contradistinctive play with the white, the firmness of the stroke and the disappearing edge, have engaged them" (Teruo Ueno, Professor of History of Fine Arts, Kyoto University). Box cover missing, box frame missing 4 inch chip at lower left corner and held to box at upper left corner. Right box frame with tears but still attached. Title page age-toned, other plates very lightly age-toned. Box in overall poor, plates in good to very good condition. Ulfert Wilke (1907-1987), born in Bavaria, Germany, was an internationally recognized painter, calligrapher, museum director and art collector. He was also the founding and acting director of the University of lowa Museum of Arts from 1968 to 1978. Wilke is best known for his abstract painting and calligraphic creations connected to the abstract expressionism movement.
No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. Folio size limited edition 400 copies in paperboard box with linen cover. Printed at the Kuroyama Collotype Printing Co. Kyoto. Box bottom has 2 edge cracks and part of bottom edges splitting. Linen covered box top is a little bowed but has no splits. There is a couple small spots and a rubbed spot in the paper. The thick paper inner cover is in fine condition. There is a little toning to the title page. The info page and 24 plates are fine with no faults. Scarce.
