Typed letter signed to "Mr Dandy",a longstanding English friend, in English. Signed "Frederick Prince of Prussia". Patmore HalI, Little Hadham, Herts, I June 1954. One page, slighly creased but suitable for framing. He responds to Mr Dandy's sympathy and adds: "I spent the last few days with my mother in Germany. Thank God she did not suffer. She passed away quite peacefully. The funeral took place on a lovely, sunny spring day up on the Burg Hohenzollern, where once you met my mother." He has no photographs but will send any he gets. He adds (after all he was a farmer) some words about the prospects for crops. He writes a postscript, thanking him for the "cutting" (presumably newspaper).…

Gilt-lettered green cloth sunned and a little flecked; binding a little shaken; some light offsetting from the plates; old prices markings in blue pencil on the half-title; a very good copy. A memoir of hunting in Asia and Europe by the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It includes elephant and tiger hunting in India and Ceylon, as well as ibex, deer, chamois, and game birds in Europe. On reverse, a typed note addressed to 'Mr. James Dandy / England.', and dated from 'Hechingen, Zezember 1949': 'Herzlichen Dank für Ihr liebes Paket, es hat mich sehr gefreut. / Beste Wünsche u. Grüse'. TWO: View of Hechingen Castle. 8.5 x 13 cm. Typed message on reverse, also signed by him: 'Herzlichen Dank für das freundliche Gedenken zu Weihnachten. Die guten Wünsche zum Neuen Jahre erwidere ich aufrichtig.' With envelope with German stamps and postmark, and typed address to 'James Dandy, Esq., / Brook Lane / Rixton/New Warrington / England'. Stamped on reverse '4 JAN 1950'. A Seated Wilhelm, grey-haired and tight-lipped, with hands joined in front of him, wearing suit and tie and light-grey tweed jacket. TWO: Half-length portrait, apparently from the same shoot as One, with autograph signature. 8 x 11 cm. Written on reverse: 'HECKINGEN. / SEP. 7. 1951'. Same outfit as One, but with cigarette in right hand. Inscribed around the head: 'James Dandy / Crownprince Wilhelm'. THREE: View of Hechingen Castle. 8.5 x 13 cm. Typed message on reverse, dated 'Hechingen. / im Mai 1951.', 'Herzlichen Dank für das treue Gedenken und die guten Wünsche zu meinem Geburtstag.' Although Wilhelm's birthday was indeed in May, the signature to this note is not his. A fourth item (in good condition, lightly aged) is a card with a printed new year's message from 'Stuttgart-Frauenkopf, January 1954'. An autograph note in English, with the same signature as Item Three, reads: 'With kind thoughts and thanking you for the bulbs'. …

Closed tear on two leaves [199-202], with prior tape repair. Complete with frontispiece portrait and ten full-page illustrations by A.B. Frost, all with captioned tissue covers. Includes the publisher's white paper dust jacket, in delicate condition, title and printed illustrations. Both hinge flaps detached, chip from front cover, scarce in any condition, with only one other known example to appear at auction. (BAL 7131) (Grolier, 100 American) Housed in a custom beige cloth clamshell, marbled interior, title stamped in gilt on the spine. From a signed limited edition of 250 copies, this being number 109. Signed by the author after the dedication: "Joel Chandler Harris," with an excerpt from the book: "Han' me down my walkin' cane." This copy was a presentation copy from D. Appleton & Company to the 13-year old, German Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, the last German Crown Prince and Crown Prince of Prussia, before the abolition of the monarchy. The first edition of Uncle Remus was published by D. Appleton in 1881. This New and Revised edition was issued in red buckram as a trade edition. (Provenance: Estate of Actor and Comedian, Arte Johnson, purchased in 2025). This work includes a letter from Freiherr von Lyncker, the Baron von Lyncker (Lieutenant Colonel and First Military Governor), regretting that the gifts for the Crown Prince cannot be accepted, and the book must be returned. Here is a full translation of the letter: "Plön in Holstein, 27 August 1896 / Dear Mrs. Franklin, I am honored to write to you in response to your letter of the 24th of this month addressed to General von Deines, and to express my sincere gratitude for sending the Uncle Remus book. At the same time, I have to inform you that gifts to His Imperial and Royal Highness the Crown Prince are not accepted as a matter of principle. I therefore regret to inform you that I am obliged to return this lovely book. / Yours sincerely, Freiherr von Lyncker / Oberstleutnant and Erster Militär-Gouverneur.".
