A satirical poem on travelling in Europe in the 1820s, culminating in a visit to the Congress of Verona (1822) - one of the series of congresses that aimed to settle various knotty problems left unsol…ved after the Napoleonic Wars. For reasons that are not clear, this has been attributed to Sir Egerton Brydges, even though it is said to be the work of the same author as My Note-Book (1821), which claims on its title page to be the work of one 'Wilfred Woodfall'. That could be a pseudonym, but it's highly unlikely to be one adopted by Brydges, since My Note-Book is a London-based topical satire which really could not have been written by someone on the continent - and Brydges was away from England almost continuously from the 1819 onwards. Also, since both titles were published by Whittaker, the attribution of this one to the same author is unlikely to be wrong. Written in a clever and facile manner, the poem has references to other British travellers in Italy, such as Byron himself (p. 89), who had been living at Pisa 'in a state of almost total seclusion from his countrymen', and the various representatives of the Great Powers arriving at Verona. Not in Jackson, Annals of English Verse; Copac locates just two copies (BL and Cambridge). Not mentioned by Woodworth, Literary Career of Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges (1935).
