Limited first edition, one of one thousand copies of this collection of poems about the Pacific Coast. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel, frontispiece, illustrated with black and white photographs. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front pastedown, "To Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt from the author, J.P. Widney." The recipient, Eleanor Roosevelt was a political figure, diplomat, and activist. She was the longest-servingÂfirst lady of the United States, during her husbandÂFranklin D. Roosevelt's four terms as president from 1933 to 1945. Through her travels, public engagement, and advocacy, she largely redefined the role. Widowed in 1945, she served as aÂUnited States Delegate to the United Nations General AssemblyÂfrom 1945 to 1952, and took a leading role in designing the text and gaining international support for theÂUniversal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1948, she was given a standing ovation by the assembly upon their adoption of the declaration. PresidentÂHarry S. TrumanÂlater called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to herÂhuman rights achievements.ÂIn very good condition with rubbing. Joseph Pomeroy Widney was a prominent American physician, educator, and civic leader whose work significantly influenced the development of Los Angeles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As one of the founders of the University of Southern California, Widney served as its second president, helping to establish the university as a center for education and culture in the growing city. A devout Methodist, Widney integrated his faith with his pursuits, advocating for the moral and social improvement of society through education and public health. He was also a pioneer in medicine, emphasizing preventive care and the role of environmental factors in health, particularly in his writings about the benefits of Southern California's climate. Widney's legacy is a testament to his vision for a thriving, interconnected community shaped by education, faith, and public service.
