In a uniform quarter polished calf binding with cloth boards and attractive marbled endpapers. Collated, presumed complete, with illustrations by John Charlton, Stanley L. Wood, and Samuel Edmund Waller. All volumes are undated, dated using Copac. In a uniform quarter polished calf binding with cloth boards. Externally slightly faded and rubbed to spines, resulting in loss of leather to tail of 'Riding Recollections'. Very slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean, slightly age toned to edges with scattered spotting to textblock. Occasional scattered spotting to the fore edge of the odd page. 8vo, pp. [ii], viii, 272; contemporary tree calf, gilt, spine gilt, red morocco label (most of blue label missing). Second edition: first published the year before. An English selection of Irish poems, from a miscellany published by subscription in Dublin in 1772. Samuel Whyte (1734-1811) established an academy in Dublin in 1758, modelled on English grammar schools. The venture proved successful, and among his pupils were Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Thomas Moore. The majority of the poems in The Shamrock were by Whyte himself, and many of the others were by his pupils; disappointingly for posterity, however, he chose not to identify the authorship of individual pieces. A prefatory note by the publisher of this London selection ends as follows: 'Few of the poems contained in this volume are known in this kingdom, but the major part are not known at all: the rescuing so many excellent poems from oblivion, or at least confined to so small a spot as its own kingdom, was the design of this edition.'
