NOTE: It is customary for new members of the Saintsbury Club to offer a gift of good wine to the Club. In Sir Frederick Whyte's foreword he expresses his regret that this is not possible due to the current war. In the interim, he offers this booklet as a "Christmas Card for the Saintsbury Club in 1943". It consists of a reprint of an essay by Helen Waddell about the founder of the Club, George Saintsbury.
