"I have just received yr last two drawings. / I will have these drawn I think, for photography gives a coat to the wood and when you think your tints are too light - you find them too dark. / With regard to the Beach cut I am persuaded that in printing it will now come very near the… original, the colours of which I think you must have forgotten, and I have written to Mr Smiles (who seems to wish to get on without the subject) to try it at press - now it has been more finished - which I trust you will also approve. . . . PS. / I send a proof of the Mills, as Mr S[miles?] has written for it - for it comes early." The son of the artist, Josiah Wood Whymper, he entered his father's business in Lambeth as a wood-engraver at an early age. In 1860, he was commissioned to make a series of sketches of Alpine scenery, and undertook an extensive journey in the Central and Western Alps. The following year, Whymper completed the ascent of Mont Pelvoux, later reaching the summit of a neighbouring peak, subsequently named the Pointe des Ecrins (which at that time was the highest point in the French Alps) in 1864. In July 1865, he succeeded in reaching the summit of the Matterhorn by way of the eastern face, after six previous attempts had ended in failure. However, four members of the party were killed on the descent, resulting in a formal investigation on his return. His account of the accident is featured in "Scrambles among the Alps" (1871), which is illustrated with his own engravings. In 1880, he made the first ascent of Chimborazo, and spent a night on the summit of Cotopaxi, in addition to making first ascents of six other great peaks. He died in 1911. The recipient is not named, but is clearly a book illustrator, and the letter provides an interesting view of the practices of book illustrators and engravers in Victorian London. Why…mper begins by stating that he is sorry to have missed his 'Call', and to have been 'equally unfortunate this afternoon', when he left at his house 'Two pieces of wood & a little book I want you (if convent [sic]) to make me a Front[ispiece]. for by Thursday Morng. The subject to be from Page 10. where the stranger (who really is her father) plants the rose tree for her on her mothers grave. With reference to the future Sir John Gilbert he reports that 'Gilbert has done the vignettes for I did not know of yr return and I have left one at yr house that you may avoid any disparity in figures'. He has been 'daily expecting to call' on him, or he would have thanked him for his letter, and for 'leaving Hardings book for me'. The book is 'a great treat', which he wants to read 'with some diligence to read learn and inwardly digest it'. He wants to see what the recipient has 'done in the North', and hopes that he has 'returned invigorated'. He suggests a time when he will call, if he does not hear from him.
