Charles Frederick Whitney was born in Pittston, Maine on June 18, 1858. A painter, illustrator and art teacher, he studied at the Massachusetts State Normal Art School. He specialized in watercolor landscapes and seascapes of the Eastern United States. Whitney published several books used in art instruction, and taught at the Wheelock School in Boston, Massachusetts. He also taught at the Summer Camp (Camp Vision) at Tamworth, New Hampshire. He exhibited widely in the New England area during his career. He also studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. His works are held in their collection. In 1934 he was living in Danvers, Massachusetts. The exact date of his death is not known. Around the end of the 19th century well-known New England artist and teacher Charles Frederick Whitney (1858 - 1949) traveled the country and documented Native American designs and symbols in his sketchbook-along with the artists' description of what they represented. In 1925 he privately printed his notes and sketches in "Indian Designs and Symbols". Any artist, historian, or ethnographer will find this small book of interest. The author wrote :The origin and derivation of many of these we may not know, but I give the interpretation of some as I have found them used, or as they have been given to me.The inspiration of most of the designs was found in nature, the the limitations imposed by the materials used in weaving often necessitated straight lines and angles where curves were pictured in the mind of the weaver.We are told that the decoration or symbol used in the painting or weaving depended largely upon the use to which the object was to be put.
