Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards, blind stamped on front and rear with ornate gilt to spine. Exterior is heavily worn with corners rounded. Cloth is soiled and spine is chipping along top edge and left lower hinge area. Internal binding appears acceptable the book has the feel of something that was well read. Pages are toned due to age spotting boards/foxing is present throughout with some pages being severe. Some pages are quite darkened due to the publisher using different types of paper. As they well-worn book with heavy spotting but is still intact and very much readable. This is the second printing with the title first published in the year 1856.

Book condition: poor, very scarce, reading copy only, several wonderful full page b/w illustrations, brown cloth boards feature title in a beautiful gilt design with stamped trim design, corners well scuffed and rounded with finish off top right front, spine has been covered with three inches of white tape with title written in ink, a one inch wide piece of tape reinforces both gutters, binding split open at page 96 with following signature detached but present, otherwise the interior is free of writing and intentional marks, 424 pages followed four pages of other books by publisher, 5.5 X 7.5 inches. Duodecimo, 432 pages, blind embossed brown cloth (featuring the head of a male lion), spine darkened, scuffed, some wear, foxing "The book is written in simple words, telling of great successes, and hand to hand battles with the lion, and portraying a hunter's feelings, his anxieties, and pleasures, with literal fidelity - Introduction by the translator." Gerard was credited with killing 25 lions in 11 years around Algeria. He also nurtured a lion cub and raised it. He also describes panthers, jackals, hyenas, stags, antelope, hawking, wild boar etc. Whitehead was a New York lawyer and avid hunter, too, who authored CAMP-FIRES OF THE EVERGLADES. Frontispiece, illustrated title-page, 6 plates.
