Very scarce. 200 pages. Captain Samuel Albert White was a wealthy Australian racehorse owner, soldier, explorer, conservationist and amateur ornithologist. He fought in the South African War 1900-1903, reaching the rank of Captain, which title he continued to use throughout his life. He made several private ornithological collecting expeditions across remote areas of Australia, to Alice Springs (1913), Musgrave and Everard Ranges (1914), Cooper Creek (1916), Nullarbor Plain (1917-1918), Finke River (1921), and Adelaide to Darwin and return (1922), on behalf of Gregory Mathews. He was a foundation member of the South Australian Ornithological Association (SAOA) in 1899, and served as its President for several periods between 1904 and 1944. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) in 1901, and served as its President 1914-1916. …

Samuel Albert White (1870-1954), son of Samuel White (1835-1880) of Reedbeds and an early South Australian settler, was a significant contributor to South Australian ornithology with many substantial expeditions to his credit. He was well connected, a strong promotor of indigenous rights and took a keen interest in conservation. PROVENANCE: Arthur Mills Lea (1868-1932) was the entomologist at the South Australian Museum until his death and published extensively.…

Souter (an amateur ornithologist from Maitland in country South Australia), with the latter's ownership signature on the flyleaf. Original printed textured wrappers with the full title page details repeated on the front cover; wrappers slightly marked and a little dusty, with light wear to the ends of the spine; inner margin of one leaf creased (a minor production flaw); a very good copy. A presentation copy, inscribed on the verso of the title page 'To Walter Howchin Esq F.G.S. etc | with the writer's best wishes | Wetunga | 3/10/14'. Walter Howchin (1845-1937), English-born geologist and clergyman, emigrated to Adelaide in 1881. He was 'elected to the Royal Society of South Australia in 1883, beginning an association of fifty-three years; he was editor for most of the time until 1933, president in 1894-96 and published seventy-seven, mostly geological, papers in the Transactions'. McLaren 16759 ('Expedition commenced from Port Augusta on 21 August 1912'). Not noted (and presumably not noticed) by the bibliographer, pages 42-58 contain 'Bird Life on the Lakes. Ornithological Observations', an account of an earlier short journey White and his wife took to the Murray Lakes and environs in late February 1912.…
