Includes Inaugural Programs from 1981 with invitations to the White House, inaugural schedules and White House Christmas Cards. A unique collection of Reagan Administration ephemera, all housed in black leather archival folio. Sue Mathis, later Sue Mathis-Richard, served in the White House Media Liaison Office beginning in 1981. After the shooting of Press Secretary Jim Brady, her office was reorganized, and the office of Media Relations was created. In 1984, Mathis become the Director of Media Relations. In 1987 she left the White House and assumed a position as corporate communications director for Walt Disney Corporation. In 1988, she was asked to join the Bush-Quayle campaign, serving as the Florida communications director. Letters. Zustand: Very good. White House Documents. Letter typed on four sheets of White House stationery and dated July 15, 1985. Letter previously framed, with small mounting remnants on verso. Presidential appointment signed in autopen by President Ronald Reagan, dated July 12, 1985. Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year. Appointment of Edward J. Perkins as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia, includes the White House letter detailing his mission objectives and his official appointment from President Ronald Reagan. James "Jim" Brady (1940-2014) was the White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan. His life took a dramatic turn on March 30, 1981, when he was shot in the head during the attempted assassination of President Reagan. The injury left Brady partially paralyzed and with some cognitive impairment. He remained the White House Press Secretary through the Reagan administration, with others filling the position as "acting" or "deputy" Press Secretaries. As Brady recovered, he became an ardent supporter of gun control. Alongside his wife, Sarah Brady, he dedicated his life to advocating for stricter handgun laws and regulations. This advocacy led to the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1993, which required background checks for handgun purchases from licensed dealers. In 2000, the White House briefing room was renamed the James S. Brady Press Room in his honor. White House photograph of Vice President George H.W. Swearingen, the president of Standard Oil of Indiana and one of the most influential oil executives of the 20th century. When he became CEO in 1960, he deemed Indiana Standard Oil to be a "second-rate company." Through aggressive research and oil exploration, Indiana Standard quickly became one of the most profitable companies in the United States. Swearingen was vocal about his dislike for federal regulators, often supporting Republicans who shared his views on limited government. In retirement, he was a close friend of presidents Gerald R. Ford and Richard Nixon. Swearingen died in 2007, survived by his wife, Bonnie Swearingen, who passed away in 2020.
