Very good. Marginal mend well away from printed image, else excellent. Size 20.75 x 29.75 Inches. This is a striking c. 1960 Claude Brusseau bird's-eye view or map of the White Mountains, New Hampshire. Overlooking the mountains from a fictional point high above Lake Winnipesaukee, Mount Washington and the Presidential Range is illustrated to the right while the Franconia Range is on the left. The Mount Washington Cog Railway appears on the left side of Mount Washington where the train makes its way up the mountain (This train formerly operated on Mount Desert Island). Pink dots mark popular activities and sites, including the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, 'The Flume', 'Story Land', 'Santa's Village', and the 'Wildcat Mountain Gondolas'. Several towns, including Littleton, Jefferson, Conway, and Plymouth, are labeled and the region's highways are identified. Publication History and Census This view was drawn by Claude Brusseau and published by the White Mountains Recreation Association c. 1960. Scarce.…

Very good. Minor verso reinforcement at some fold intersections. Minor wear along original fold lines. Original folder included. Size 27.5 x 26.25 Inches. A dramatic 1902 top-down George H. Walker chromolithograph bird's-eye view of Mt. Washington and the White Mountains, New Hampshire. This view was issued for the Boston and Maine Railroad, which not only operated the best trains to get to the White Mountains, but also the famous Mount Washington Cog Railway. A Closer Look Circular panoramic views, as here, became popular in Europe in the second half of the 19th century, but this is the first such we are aware of to highlight an American mountain. The clever view can be rotated with the uppermost portion always being right-side up. Landmarks, including Lake Winnepesaukee, Sunday River, Sebago Lake, Portland, and the Isle of Shoals - just a few of the 189 places noted. Mount Washington In the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains, Mt. Washington is the highest mountain in the northeastern United States. With the Naturalism movement in the second half of the 19th century, the White Mountains in general and Mt. Washington specifically became a hotbed of tourism. On Mt. Washington, several luxurious hotels opened, including Summit House (#2, 1852), a 64-foot-long (20 m) stone hotel anchored by four heavy chains, and Tip-Top House (#4, 1853). An observation tower (#3) was also built. Both a stage road (#6, 10) and the Mount Washington Cog Railway (#1, 1869) were constructed to facilitate travel - both remain in use today. Mount Washington even had its own newspaper, Among the Clouds , (#5) published each summer from 1885 to 1917 by Henry M. Burt. Boston and Maine Railroad Commonly known as the 'B and M', the Boston and Maine Railroad was chartered in New Hampshire on June 27, 1835. The firm consolidated several smaller companies, including the Andover and Haverhill Railroad and later the Boston and Portland Railroad. It merged with the Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts Railroad in 1842 but retained the Boston and Maine operating name. In the subsequent decades, it acquired or leased several other railroads, including the Boston and Lowell (1887), Northern (1884), Connecticut River (1893), Concord and Montreal (1887), and Fitchburg (1900). In 1897, it expanded service with the scenic Lake Shore Line, which ran along the southern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. In 1910, it was acquired by J. P. Morgan and his New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The firm initially prospered on the development of mill towns throughout New England and later capitalized on tourism from urban centers in Boston and New York. Nonetheless, the railroad went through a decline during the Great Depression, when most of the old textile mills closed. Part of the Boston and Maine network remains in operation today under the Pan Am Railways (PAS) brand. Chromolithography Chromolithography, sometimes called oleography, is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process uses multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Generally, a chromolithograph begins with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors are layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color can be blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda. Publication History and Census This view was drawn in 1902 and published in chromolithograph by George H. Walker of Boston for the Passenger Department of the Boston and Maine Railroad. The map is well represented institutionally, but has become extremely scarce to the market.…

Very good. Slight toning. Very slight verso reinforcements at some fold intersections. Size 19.5 x 22.5 Inches. This is Harvey Boardman's 1858/59 map of the White Mountains, New Hampshire. This is among the first maps of the White Mountains made for the tourism industry - which, with the advantage of railroad access, opened the legendarily scenic area to regional travel. A Closer Look The remarkably useful map features roads, carriageways, and summit trails throughout the presidential range, Mount Moriah, Mount Lafayette, Mount Willard, and Cannon Mountain. It notes the locations of public buildings, churches, mills, and hotels. It is attractively decorated with vignettes of public houses and hotels throughout the region, naming their proprietors. Two tables in the lower right allow the calculation of distances between lodgings, making it relevant to the traveler. While Boardman is known to have surveyed the distances of the roads on his maps personally - contemporary reports have him trekking about the mountains with an odometer - he relied on the 1853 work of George Bond for elevations. Tourism to the Whites In 1858-59, the White Mountains emerged as a booming outdoor mecca as the region became a popular destination for urban visitors seeking natural beauty and fresh air. The completion of railroads made travel easier, bringing tourists from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and other cities. The scenic landscape, characterized by towering peaks, dramatic valleys, and pristine forests, attracted artists, writers, and travelers. Grand hotels, such as the Mount Washington House (illustrated here) catered to wealthier visitors, offering comfortable accommodations in the wilderness. Outdoor activities like hiking and scenic carriage rides to famous landmarks, including Mount Washington, the Old Man in the Mountain, and Franconia Notch, became popular, as did the early form of landscape photography that helped publicize the area's beauty. This era coincided with the Rusticators Movement, marking the beginning of the White Mountains as a premier destination in American tourism. Publication History and Census The present example of Boardman's map was printed in 1859 by John Henry Bufford. It is identifiable as the 1859 second state through several corrections (including the transposition of Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Adams) and the imprint of 'Smith, Knight and Tappan'. A further state, printed by H. S. Fifield in 1861, also exists. Over all of its editions, the map is well represented in institutional collections. We are aware of twelve examples in auctions and dealers' catalogs going back as far as 1911. References: Rumsey 3207.004. OCLC 44145194.
