8°, Leinenband. In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. Card Covers. Published in the same year. 8vo. pp. 132. Original publisher's blue card lettered black on upper cover black comb binding. Loosely inserted four typed signed letters all written to John Lyle, the first is from Jon Mandchip White addressed from 96 Cherokee Bluff, Cherokee Trail, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920 dated December 1, 1980 and consisting of about 400 words in which he requests several books, two by Christopher Logue, a friend when White lived in London and one by Paul Sieveking who was his godson. He goes on to ask Lyle's advice about finding a publisher for 'Death by Dreaming' in the UK. A second letter written on headed notepaper from The University of Tennessee, Department of English, Knoxville, Tennessee 37916 dated January 21, 1981 and consisting of about 330 words in which he thanks Lyle for the books and for the suggestion of Landesman as a possible publisher for his book. He goes on to discuss the BBC 'It emasculated too many wild and gifted men in its heyday, even men of the quality of Macniece and my boisterous old comrade (if he'd forgive the term) Roy Campbell.' He mentions his one and only appearance on television in Lance Sieveking's 'A Tomb with a View', playing the villainous Dr Bomberg (a non-speaking part) and says that Sieveking was 'a lively and enquiring and striking addition to an increasingly tired and flabby cultural scene. Exactly the same may be said of Jacques Brunius, a kind, engaging and very funny man who has never had his due.' The third letter from Cosmo Landesman to John Lyle, Harpford, Sidmouth, Devon EX10 0NH written on headed notepaper from Jay Landesman, One Five Nine Wardour Street, London W.1 dated 13. 4. 81 and consisting of about 90 words in which Landesman says he is unable to publish 'Death by Dreaming' due to the state of the market at the moment. Finally an air letter addressed to John Lyle at his Devon address from Jon Manchip White, 96 Cherokee Bluff, Knoxville, TN 37920 dated June 14, 1981 and consisting of about 530 words in which he says there has been 'a gratifying amount of attention' given to his book which has already been picked up by the paperback house, Ace Books. He goes on to discuss various booksellers attending the American Book Association meeting in Atlanta and enquires after further books. Jon Manchip White (1924 Ð 2013) was a prolific Welsh author who settled in the USA in 1967. John Lyle (1932 Ð 2002) began his career in the book trade in the 1950s, a decade later he had set up a company in Exeter specialising in books on Surrealism. Reviews taped on to inside cover. A few corrections in the text. Upper cover coming slightly away from binding, otherwise very good. 0918222273 Slight wear, otherwise very good.
