They were just what she needed for her own garden, and she asked her host what they were. "Those are Nellie Stevens hollies," was the reply. She looked again and couldn't help but wonder about the name. Who in the world is Nellie Stevens, and how did her name ever become associated with this plant? She noted other intriguing names, and she asked similar questions. She saw a beautifulblue clematis and wondered if Betty Corning was still alive and what stories she had to tell. She wondered about the places and people whose names are associated with so many popular garden plants. She is not alone. If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the mother of research. In many cases, we wonder not what our gardens grow, but who our gardens grow. Until now, these accounts have not been compiled and unfortunately, many of the people are disappearing, their stories with them. Now gardeners can enjoy the beauty of their plants and delight in the tales they tell." ; Contents: Anna, Illinois -- Arnold Arboretum -- Janes Bath -- Lole Benedict -- ray Bracken -- Luther Burbank -- Molly Bush -- Cedar lane Farm -- John Champneys, Phillippe Noisette -- Corbett, maryland -- Betty Corning -- John Creech -- Roy Davidson -- Vince and Barbara Dooley -- Eco-Gardens -- Katie Ferguson -- Henry and Sally Fuller -- Fred Galle -- Gardenview Horticultural park -- Azilda Gerbing -- Goodness Grows -- Kim Hawks -- mary Gibson Henry -- Poly Hill -- Andre Iseli -- Tina James -- Joseph Kassab -- Hella Lacy -- Michael Lindsey -- Carol Mackie -- Frank N Meyer -- Montrose Nursery -- David Mooberry -- Mt. On January 6th, 2005, the Bush family celebrated the 60th wedding anniversary of former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush at the White House. The black-tie affair was attended by friends and family, including Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Secretary of State James Baker, former British Prime Minister John Major, Brent Scowcroft and the recipient of this photograph, Alma Powell. Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell. Paper Photograph. Zustand: Near fine. White House photograph of Vice President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, visiting with the White House Press Secretary James Brady. Brady was permanently disabled during the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981. (illustrator). Signed Photograph. Color photograph, measures 8" x 10". Stamped with "Official Photograph / The White House / Washington" on verso, with date code below. Tape residue to verso, previously framed. Inscribed on the white matte: "To Jim Brady, With best wishes. George Bush / Thanks for coming - Barbara." A great association copy. James "Jim" Brady (1940-2014) was the White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan. His life took a dramatic turn on March 30, 1981, when he was shot in the head during the attempted assassination of President Reagan. The injury left Brady partially paralyzed and with some cognitive impairment. He remained the White House Press Secretary through the Reagan administration, with others filling the position as "acting" or "deputy" Press Secretaries. As Brady recovered, he became an ardent supporter of gun control. Alongside his wife, Sarah Brady, he dedicated his life to advocating for stricter handgun laws and regulations. This advocacy led to the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1993, which required background checks for handgun purchases from licensed dealers. In 2000, the White House briefing room was renamed the James S. Brady Press Room in his honor. Signed.
