Gollancz, Left Book Club, London, 1939; 8vo, 130 x 190mm; pp 383; standard red paper covered boards, slight dust marking but a good or better copy. . . . Brought up in New Zealand, Amber Reeves, as she then was, moved with her family to London when she was about nine. She went up to Newnham in 1905, becoming active and prominent in socialist and feminist politics, including establishing the Cambridge University Fabian Society in 1906. She was highly regarded for her intellectual capability and exercise. Later she formed a relationship with H G Wells and although anxious not to break up Wells's marriage deliberately had a child with him. Wells's novel "Ann Veronica" is based on their relationship. . . .She and Wells collaborated on the latter's important sociological book "The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind" while separately she wrote several fiction and non-fiction works including this offered here. The work, according to her preface, is an attempt to examine the use of government propaganda, to influence opinion, to describe the effects occasioned in consequence, and to identify any lessons which might be useful to progressive parties.

Amber Blanco White (1887-1981) noted that this was the book which best summed up her personal philosophy. Production delay slip tipped in before p. v. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Cloth bright, very light bumping, contents fresh; several short closed tears and chips to margins of unclipped jacket, spine faintly toned and marked: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
