New. $75. * Whishaw [1808-1879], a member of Gray's Inn, set out to produce a law dictionary in the tradition of Rastell, which would offer "the exposition of the common terms and phrases of the Law" (Preface p. vi) in a concise manner unlike the voluminous dictionaries that were being produced contemporaneously. Although intended as a simplification of terms and created for the young lawyer, this is by no means a dictionary merely for the novice. Whishaw included French, Latin and English words and phrases as well as "obsolete words" from "old legal, historical and antiquarian writers" and cited early law books and dictionaries in the entries (Cowell, Blount, Hale's Pleas of the Crown, etc.). This dictionary went into a later edition in 1832. In 1835 Whishaw published A synopsis of the members of the English bar. This important work remains uncommon institutionally and in the trade.…

The letter begins: 'My dear Loch | Some friends of mine from the Country are desirous of seeing Lord Stafford's & Lord Grosvenor's pictures some time next week; & they understand that the obtaining of Tickets is not a matter of course but that some little interest is necessary.' He asks for assistance 'with regard to Cleveland House [.] for Mrs Johnston & party (about 5 or 6 persons)'. He is going 'to the Cambridge Election' on the following day, and thinks that it will be 'very keenly contested'. On his return he hopes 'to attend the Council of the London University', when he hopes 'that Horner's business will be finally & satisfactorily settled'. He has heard 'nothing more about Silk Gowns', but 'Willy Brougham [.] persists in retaining his appointment and will not be scared into resignation, like Plunkett, by the Chancery Lawyers.' In the last paragraph he deprecates the news that 'Lord Exeter is to have one of the blue Ribbands, though he is no friend of Canning's, & indeed closely connected with the high Tory opposition'. This is, in his view, 'one among many instances of C's weakness, & entire dependence upon the higher power.' There is no mention of Loch in Lady Seymour's 'The "Pope" of Holland House, Selections from the Correspondence of John Whishaw and his Friends, 1813-1840' (1906), and the year 1827 is skirted over.…

A little rubbed, with minor nicks to boards; extremities worn, joints starting at ends, hinges cracked but holding. Light toning, occasional foxing; penultimate signature partially detached yet secure. Early ownership signature of "A. H. Trevor" to front free endpaper; later institutional stamps and shelfmarks of the German Reichsgericht to title and front endpaper verso. Scattered early annotations in Trevor's hand to nine pages. James Whishaw, a member of Gray's Inn, here sought to provide both the student and the practitioner with a portable and judicious compendium of "the common terms and phrases of the Law" (Preface, p. vi), while also admitting obsolete expressions drawn from earlier legal, historical, and antiquarian authorities. Entries encompass English, French, and Latin terms, with frequent citation to standard sources such as Cowell, Blount, and Hale. Though intended in part for the younger lawyer, the work is of wider utility, notable for its engagement with early legal literature and its preservation of archaisms otherwise dispersed across difficult sources. Our copy is of particular interest for its associations. The early owner, "A. H. Trevor," is almost certainly Arthur Hill Trevor (1858-1924), Inner Temple barrister, Commissioner in Lunacy (1907-1914), and later a Commissioner on the India Board; he is also remembered for his parallel career as a first-class cricketer with Sussex.
