This is the "Special De Luxe Independence Edition of the Centenary Issue of the Writings of Thomas Paine", signed by the editor, Daniel Edwin Wheeler, on the Limitation Page. Publisher's full grey silk with parchment labels on spines, top edges gilt, fore-edges deckle. Each volume contains a color frontispiece, in the first volume it is a colour portrait which is tipped-in, with gilt decoration; title-pages in red and black. Illustrated with between four and five B&W plates in each volume, each with a descriptive tissue-guard. The red lettering on the parchment labels is faded (as usual) and the labels are soiled, else as new; unmarked, unread, tight, square, and clean. A large, heavy set - additional shipping charges may apply, particularly for expedited or international shipment. FINE. Color and B&W illustrations. Small 4to 9" - 11" tall.

Colour frontispieces, the first a colour portrait tipped in, with gilt-detailed decoration, thereafter simpler and in colour. Black and white plates, around four or five per volume; descriptive tissue guards. Title pages printed in red and black. Modern blue full morocco bindings, with raised bands, gilt ruling and red and black gilt-lettered leather title labels to spines; top edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Extremities a bit rubbed, with a few minor white marks and small chips to edges of raised bands in a couple of cases. A number of pages have been unopened, though there are a couple of cases and no more of minor foxing and one heavier stain at p. 92 of final volume. Otherwise a good clean and fresh set in near fine condition. The special de luxe Independence Edition was of the Centenary Issue of Paine's writings, marking his death in 1809. This is a heavy set and may require additional postage if being shipped outside of Europe. 8vo. Limited Edition.
