Written for and dedicated to Mr. Franklin Murphy Jun. By a Westerner". Illustrated with 15 mounted albumen photographs, including several images taken by William Henry Jackson, one full-page wood engraving: "The Vigilants" by Rufus Zogbaum, and several white-line wood engravings of the "Grand Caverns" (Cave of the Winds); all captioned in ink by the author. Lacking the back cover and spine, the front card cover is toned and chipped at the edges, else very good, with the text block clean and holding firm by the original stitching. A compelling, well-written fictional narrative purporting to be a true account of an 1886 Indian raid on five resort hotels at Manitou Springs located near the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. Written and illustrated by "a Westerner" at the Antlers hotel in Colorado Springs, the manuscript features several contemporary William Henry Jackson photographs of Manitou Springs: including the Iron Springs Hotel, Ute Pass, and various sites in The Garden of the Gods and Monument Park. Also included is hand-colored photograph of a woman in Indian dress, and a view of the Antlers hotel in 1886. The natural mineral springs at Manitou, located at the base of Pike's Peak, were considered sacred grounds visited by Ute, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and other plains tribes. The arrival of white settlers and developers in the 1870s, and construction of resort hotels in the early 1880s heightened tensions and led to "skirmishes" for access to the springs and adjacent Native American hunting grounds until the Native Americans were removed from the area and placed on reservations. Thus playing on the fear of hotel guests and local residents, that a band of Native American warriors might one day breakout from the reservation "like the celebrated Apache Chief Geronimo," the anonymous author of this detailed and neatly written manuscript purports to give a full account "of the Indian raid on the Iron Springs Hotel on the night of July 28, 1886". The "Westerner" openly states his anti-Native American prejudices while at same time extolling the Indian Chief "Crow Wing" who led the raid as a noble savage. A vivid and detailed narrative with 15 original early photographs (and engravings) interspersed throughout the manuscript that document the principal places and events in the story.
