See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The four items in good condition, lightly aged and worn, and all folded for postage. The last item with pin hole to one corner. The first three addressed to 'Dear Sir' and the last to 'Dear Fisher'. All four signed 'A C Lyall', both with and without periods after the initials. ONE (9 October 1888…): 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. He acknowledges the 'list of lectures', which 'contains already several subjects connected with Indian religion, so that I am inclined to doubt whether any additional contribution that I could make will not be superflous.' Nevertheless, he asks questions about his 'rights over his paper, after it has been read', and 'the actual length of time which the lecture is expected to take up in delivery'. TWO (17 December 1888): 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. The 'proof of the Lecture List seems correct', and he suggests sending a dozen copies to his 'standing address' at Queen's Gate. He will 'defer replying definitively' with regard to the 'proposal that my manuscript shall be published in a volume'. He has been preparing the lecture, 'in rough notes, under the impression that the full manuscript, when filled out, would be at my own disposal for future use'. THREE (17 November 1895): 2pp, 12mo. The date that he suggests will suit Lyall 'very well for my lecture - so far as it is possible to engage ones' [sic] self for three months hence'. He has 'no experience of illustrations by the magic lantern', and does not know 'whether they would be procurable for a lecture on North India'. FOUR (23 April 1907): 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Begins: 'Dear Fisher, / It would be useless, I fear, to agree that you should give my name as a reference in connexion with your candidature for a Professorship of Commerical Law.' He explains why this is so, before stating: 'In regard to the offices you have held in India, no attestation from me is required, they can be verified from the Record of Service in the India List, and from other documents. / So I am obiged, with regret, to reply that I cannot comply with your request.'.

A visually compelling astrological yantra on cloth centring on Surya enthroned on his horse drawn chariot, within a circular mandala densely inscribed with horoscopic registers. - Executed in natural pigments on cotton, the composition radiates… from a solar face ringed by mantric and calendrical text, with radial compartments likely indicating planetary positions, nakshatras and cyclical units; the chariot wheels carry further notational cells. The green robed, composed Surya and the heraldic chariot conform to Western Indian iconographic conventions, while the script blocks - probably in Devanagari or a closely related regional hand - integrate ritual language with computational tables. - Closely comparable in structure to Western Indian horoscope and yantra folios with chariot text layouts and to cosmographic diagrams preserved on paper and cloth, the present textile sits at the intersection of vernacular astrology, ritual iconography and visual cosmography. Parallels may be drawn with Gujarati horoscope scroll traditions and with Deccan cosmographies. - Seldom encountered in this medium format, the work encapsulates the practical alignment of solar veneration and time reckoning in pre modern Indian practice and offers a legible exemplar of the region's syncretic astrological picture language. - Folded; some fraying to edges and some holes in the textile, especially along the central vertical fold; a few traces of adhesive tape repairs.

This is a beautiful 1835 manuscript map of the western portion of the Hoshangabad District in modern day Madhya Pradesh, India. The map covers from the Narmada River south as to Baitool (Betul) and from west from the Tawa River. Several rivers, towns and… villages are noted. According to the text along the bottom margin, this map is based on a map issued in 1834 as plate 2 in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal . Established in 1784 as a center for Asian studies. The Society exists today as The Asiatic Society , and is located in Kolkata, India.

An absorbing 1932 Survey of India map of western Nepal. It highlights the remarkable terrain of the region, which sits on the border with Uttarakhand. A Closer Look The…map largely corresponds with today's Sudurpashchim (Far-West) Province in Nepal, along the border with Uttarakhand state in India (then known as the United Provinces, previously the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh), taking in part or the entirety of the districts of Baitadi, Dadeldhura (here as Dandeldhura), Doti, Bajhang (Bajang), Darchula, and Kanchanpur. It reflects the steep mountains and dense forests of the region, and its consequent limited infrastructure. What means of communication that did exist were mostly narrow mule paths, with a somewhat wider cart path leading across the border to Tanakpur (with rail connection to Delhi). Mountain peaks are noted with their elevations, as are settlements, mostly situated in the valleys between mountains, and several other features. A small inset map to the right of the title displays the included districts of Nepal and border with India, which text below indicates is only approximate, following the Sharda (also known as the Kali or Mahakali) River. Zincography At bottom-right, the map is noted as being heliozincographed in Calcutta. Zincography, or 'zinco' for short, is a planographic printing process similar to lithography. The process was known as early as 1801, when lithography inventor Alois Senefelder (1771 - 1834), in his original English patent for lithography, mentioned the possibility of using zinc plates over traditional limestone. The first zincographic process was subsequently patented in 1834 by Federico Lacelli. The process operates like traditional stone-lithography wherein ink applied to the plate is repelled by the hygroscopic areas and attracted to the fuchsine areas. It offers several advantages, most importantly, zinc plates are lighter and cheaper than lithographic stones, considerably economizing the process. As such, the process was embraced by various cartographic agencies that demanded mobility and economy, among them the British Ordinance Survey, the French Bureau Topographique, and many military mapping agencies. It was followed by photo-zincography, photo-lithography, and photogravure. Publication History and Census This map was produced by the Survey of India in 1932, relying on surveys undertaken between 1920 and 1932. It was likely intended to be a predecessor to the Survey of India's highly important 1934 survey map of the entire country (also offered by Geographicus), the first modern survey map of Nepal. A stamp at bottom-left indicates that this example belonged to the Publicity Department of the municipality of Nainital, in Uttarakhand. The map is unrecorded in the OCLC but may exist in large collections of Survey of India maps at major British research institutions.
