Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). -…Ex- Bibliotheksexemplar mit entsprechenden Stempeln und Zustand altersgemäß / Ex- library copy with corresponding stamps, Condition according to age - In The Slate Systems of Greek and Roman Antiquity, the late Professor Westermann has amplified and brought up to date his treatment of ancient slavery which first appeared in the Pauly-Wissowa Real-Encyclopädie der Altertumswissenschaft, in 1935. The work as it now appears is the product of the last twenty-five years of his scholarly activities, which were largely devoted to the study of various aspects of ancient slavery. To this study he brought a wide and deep knowledge of the ancient world, drawn not only from the literary sources but also from more specialized disciplines, such as archaeology, epigraphy, and papyrology. The sections of the book which utilize the documentation of the papyri largely break new ground in the discussion of slavery in Egypt. But Professor Westermann was a historian of broad outlook, not confined to the ancient world, and numerous sections of the book are illuminated by his study of slavery in various places and times in the University Seminars at Columbia University, in cooperation with his colleagues in the Departments of History, Economics, Government, and Sociology. In the last six chapters of the book added since the Pauly-Wissowa treatment of the subject Professor Westermann has been deeply interested in the relationship of Christianity to slavery. Publisher's device on title page. " With this volume the publication of the Zenon documents in the Columbia University collection is completed, with the exception of a few… scraps so small and so fragmentary that they can have no future importance. To the Zenon papyri in this volume we have added four Ptolemaic examples of later date, Nos. 119122. In spite of objections raised against the omission of accents and breathings in P Columbia III (Volume I of the present work), we hold to the system there used as giving a more accurate representation of the original texts than is attained through the accentuated forms. Slight deviations from the method of reference to other publications which was used in P Columbia III are recorded in the list of abbreviations. The reviewers of the first volume (P Col. III) have made a number of suggestions in regard to the reading and interpretation of the documents published here; these have been carefully considered and embodied, where we came to agree with them, in the Corrigenda at the end of this volume." (Preface). Illustrated with seven b/w reproductions of papyri. Contains list of papyri and abbreviations used at front, corrigenda and indices at rear. Binding with very light wear along edges. Block lightly age-toned.

Original printed wraps 22x28cm, with typescript title and date (18 Jan 1944) to front, and information on the Studies Committee inside. 8pp typescript printed to rectos. Ex-college library copy with their small, neat stamp over-stamped "Withdrawn" to the front, and their reference stamp inside front wr…ap (no other marks). Good, with 2 hard horizontal creases where this was folded. The Council on Foreign Relations was founded in 1921 as a foreign policy and international relations think tank. Its members include high level political, intelligence, financial, legal, academic and media figures. During 1939-45 it gained much greater influence with the State Department when it established the strictly confidential "Studies of American Interests in the War and the Peace" chaired by Norman Davies, and entirely funded by Rockefeller. It was kept secret even from Council members not party to its deliberations. It was divided into 4 groups: economic and financial; security and armaments (headed by Dulles); territorial; and political. The Territorial Group was headed by Isaiah Bowman, geographer and President of Johns Hopkins University. William Linn Westermann (1873-1954) was at this time Professor of Ancient History at Columbia, President of the American Historical Association, and a member of the Territorial Group. This paper examines the history of British and Russian rivalry in Iran; German intrigues ("super clever machinations" resulting from "the overweening ambition of Haji Wilhelm", "the incredible Wassmuss", "the recent use by Haji Hitler of 'archaeologists' including a certain Niedermeyer and Fritz Grobba"), the US in Iran, and the problem posed by the British-Russian-US agreement at the Tehran Conference (1 Dec 1943) to recognise Iranian independence. He concludes that the agreement is "fortunate" for US oil interests given its stakes in the Iraq Petroleum Company and Aramco; the US would benefit from continued British naval dominance in the Indian Ocean; US involvement would mean Iran would no longer be "a constant source of irritation in the conflicting plans of only two rival powers"; and would strengthen British-Russian relations ("both Moslem powers") "in complete accord with American ideas as to what is fair and just in dealing with the less powerful peoples". Extremely rare - no institutional holdings located, and very few online references.
