Erstausgabe
First Edition. First edition, 8vo, pp. [iii]-x, 448; addenda slip tipped in at the back; numerous plates and maps throughout, some in color; illustrations in the text; fine copy in original gilt-stamped red cloth. With the calling card of Andrew Earl Harris tipped to the front free endpaper, and inscribed "Merry Christmas - Happy 1941" and with the recipient's name underneath dated "24 December 1940." Harris "was commanding officer of USS Wake (PR 3), a gunboat in China, until November 28, 1941, when the ship was effectively abandoned in Shanghai because it was judged insufficiently seaworthy to cross the straits of Formosa. He and most of his crew sailed to Manila with the remaining gunboats. [He] died at a Japanese Prisoner of War camp near Cebu, Philippines, on June 11, 1943" (usnamemorialhall[.]org). Werner (1864?1954) was a British diplomat in Qing Dynasty China and sinologist specializing in superstition, myths and magic in that country. His adopted daughter Pamela was killed and mutilated in 1937, a murder that has yet to be solved. Paul French's Murder in Peking (2011) recounts the crime and a BBC mini-series is said to follow shortly.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "E. S. Bennett, Esqr. With the author's compts. E.C.W. Peking, 1933." The author (1864-1954) lived most of his life in China, serving as the British consul in Fuzhou. The recipient, Edward Stanley Bennett (b. 1888), joined the British consular service in China in 1912. Following his diplomatic career, Werner turned his attention to rigorous sinology. This work, one of many, discusses the history of Chinese weaponry and siege equipment, the illustrations drawn from old Chinese sources. Quarto. Illustrations in text, title page partially printed in red; Chinese characters in text. Original brown sand-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Cloth lightly rubbed and marked, several leaves dog-eared: very good indeed.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the inner front cover, "To Mrs Hope Danby from E. T. C. Werner. Peking, 1940." Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed, written by Werner from the British Embassy compound, sending Danby the book. Werner (1864-1954) lived most of his life in China and wrote several works on Chinese mythology. Memorigrams is a selection of his essays and poems, some previously published in periodicals, addressing aspects of Chinese history and culture and his own life. The final two pieces concern the still-unsolved murder of his daughter in Beijing in 1937. A mainstay of the Beijing social scene, Hope Danby (1889-1981) was a prolific writer on Chinese history and archaeology. She was a friend of the controversial scholar-collector Edmund Backhouse and wrote his entry for the Dictionary of National Biography. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece and 5 plates. Chinese characters in text. Original pink textured card wrappers, yapp edges, spine and front cover lettered in black. Small correction, perhaps in author's hand, to table of contents. Spine and peripheries of wrappers sunned, spine ends lifting, contents clean: very good.
