In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first edition, first printing, dated 1985. Original colour illustrated wraps 21x26cm. Printed by Printers Corporation SA, Spain. 168pp with colour photos by Uwe Wruck (Boushari Studios) and Gustavo Ferrari, and illustrations and calligraphy by Abdul Hafeez. Very good. Extremely rare institutionally, unrecorded on Worldcat and Library Hub, with the former only recording 1 location for the 2nd printing (1993). Suzi Wells, a freelance writer and TV presenter co-wrote "Traditions: The Folklore of Women and Children in Kuwait" with Bazza Al-Batini (1987). She taught English at the Telecommunications Training Centre, and prepared TEFL textbooks for Heinemann. Her husband Keith, Arab Times journalist and author of the Wizr trilogy (1979-84), is here credited with the layout, and for being "long-suffering and now overweight". Wells opens with a description of Kuwaiti cookery, key ingredients, and their increasing availability. She draws similarities with recipes throughout the Gulf and wider region. She reflects on the single daily meal of the poorest Bedouin (dates and camel's milk occasionally with rice), their famed hospitality, and how desert heritage continues to be recalled on special occasions. She addresses the coffee making ceremony referencing HRP Dickson. She discusses the impact of Kuwait's seafaring tradition in introducing spices from India and Oman. She closes with a culinary description of Eids and Ramadan, and customs at the end of a meal. Her preliminaries include a glossary of unusual ingredients, and an English-Arabic shopping guide. In a note on weights and measures she observes "The Arab woman regards cookery as an art rather than a science and uses cup and spoon to measure with rather than scales". The cookbook itself was prepared with much support from the Holiday Inn in Kuwait, with the pictured dishes prepared by its Executive Chef Bernard Cuq. These are arranged into starters and salads, soups, fish, chicken, meat, rice, vegetables, desserts, and a miscellany including baharat, breads, drinks, sauces, spices etc. (References: Suzi Wells' website; bio in Al-Batini and Wells, Traditions).…

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. A valuable compilation of material on the traditional lives of women and children in Kuwait before the oil era. Original colour illustrated landscape wraps 24x17cm. 152pp English text by Bazza Al-Batini and Suzi Wells, with Al-Batini's beautifully done full-page colour drawings and in-text b/w illustrations throughout. Wraps very good, interiors near fine. Al Batini was at this time a folklorist in Kuwait's Ministry of Information, having already written 3 books in Arabic on Kuwaiti women's tales, lullabies, costumes and jewellery. Prior to this she taught French, and illustrated and co-authored a series of French language secondary school books for the Ministry of Education. Suzi Wells, a freelance writer and TV presenter wrote The Arabian Gulf Cookbook (1985), taught English at the Telecommunications Training Centre, and prepared TEFL workbooks for Heinemann. Her husband Keith, Arab Times journalist and author of the Wizr trilogy (1979-84), is here credited with layout and design. Dedicated to all the women of Kuwait, the Preface notes the rapid social and economic change and what this has meant for women and girls in terms of education, opportunity, and profession. The almost total disappearance of old Kuwait during this transformation "has made it especially important that her folklore, social history and traditions are preserved". To meet this need, their book gathers material on traditional lives for modern families to hand down to the next generations, and to inform expatriates working in Kuwait including those married to Kuwaitis. Thus sections include Women's Lives (the old city, the house, family, routine, work, beauty, marriage, pregnancy and childbirth, death and mourning, proverbs, songs, dances and celebrations); Women's Tales on a variety of themes; Songs Mothers Sang (lullaby prayers, complaints, national tales, love songs, morning songs, baby care songs, teaching songs, bouncing songs); Children's Toys; Children's Songs and Games; diverse Children's Tales; Riddles; and Proverbs about Children. Also included is a Bibliography of Arabic and English works. Scarce. Al Batini, Bazza (illustrator).…
