Erstausgabe
First editions. 4tos., variable paginations, illustrated. 60 issues. A long, and near complete run from Vol. I, No. 2 through Vol. XXV, No. 2. Lacking only 6 issues from Vol. 1. Early on, the NEWS was simple folded sheets; later as the publication changed names and increased in size, it became a stapled booklet, eventually to emerge in glossy stiff wrappers. Near fine. With: INDEX TO NEWS + PHOTOGRAPHIC AND PHOTOGRAPHIC/JOURNAL (1969-1992), which was prepared by Daile Kaplan, George Gilbert, et al, and was published by The American Photographic Historical Society in 1994. The index is 8vo., iv, 24 pp. Printed stiff wrappers. Fine. It contains 600 entries that reflect major stories, reprinted information of technical interest, and columns. Additional supplementary material includes two booklets and seven member directories. "The first publication of the American Photographic Historical Society (then the Photographic Historical Society of New York) was a four-page newsletter which brought monthly news of past and future meetings along with some current events. It was called NEWS. That name held even through the Fall of 1970 when the publication emerged in a magazine format. Its ambitious editor was Harvey Zucker who first launched it as a printed magazine, setting a style which included input from numerous columnists and contributors. Subsequent editors, George Gilbert and William B. Welling . left their own imprint on the publication which Zucker had renamed, Photographica. For most of the first 20 years, the publication enjoyed 10-times a year distribution. Economies ultimately forced a bi-monthly schedule. For a four year period (1984-1987), Photographica became Photographic/Journal as a bi-monthly, edited for alternate editions by Jack Naylor of the Photographic Historical Society of New England and George Gilbert for the American Photographic Historical Society. In 1988, Photographica reemerged as an APHS publication, now a quarterly." From the introduction of the INDEX. Additional shipping charges may apply given the weight of this magazine.
