La interpretación del libro iba desde la perspectiva milenarista de Victorino de Petovio a la interpretación más simbólica de Ticonio, que consideraba el Apocalipsis en el sentido del tiempo universal y unitario de la Iglesia. El Libro de las reglas que Agustín admiraba profundamente, con sus siete principios de interpretación tuvo una gran influencia no sólo en la interpretación de los primeros siglos, sino en toda la exégesis medieval. Desde el principio el Génesis fue aceptado más fácilmente en Occidente que en Oriente. Los más antiguos comentarios al Apocalipsis en griego se remontan al de Ecumenio, del siglo vi, al que pronto siguió el de Andrés de Cesarea. De todas formas, los primitivos padres de Oriente mencionaron el Apocalipsis también en obras que no eran comentarios. En este volumen encontramos un gran número de textos tomados de los dos comentarios en griego mencionados anteriormente: el de Ecumenio y el de Andrés de Cesarea, que representan la interpretación oriental. Asimismo, otros seis Padres aportan la interpretación occidental: Victorino de Petovio, Ticonio, Primasio, Cesáreo de Arlés, Apringio de Beja y Beda el Venerable. Hemos tratado de presentar un contexto adecuado para que los lectores puedan captar más fácilmente el modo creativo en que los Santos Padres usaban la Escritura, así como su perspectiva teológica y su interés pastoral.
