First edition. ix, 201pp. This is a collection of sixteen essays by Simone Weil, collected, translated, and edited by Richard Rees. Weil is perhaps one of the most controversial and more easily misunderstood modern thinkers, yet he thought is essentially simple. This study draws upon all her published work and supplies full references, so that the reader can judge how far the editor has succeeded in presenting without bias the simple ideas which inspired Simone Weil. The essays in the collection include: Classical Science and Art, Reflections on Quantum Theory, Wave Mechanics, God in Plato, Some Thoughts on the Love of God, and Morality and Literature. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling against a green background on the spine. The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the spine ends and a neatly written name, place and date on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is faded. The top and bottom edges are rubbed with some creasing and the spine ends are bumped. The top edge has a tear of about 1/2" and another of about 1/4" and these tears, together with a nick on the bottom rear edge, have been repaired on the reverse with tape.
