Zustand: Good. - Quarto [approximately 14 inches high by 10 inches wide], softcover bound in color pictorial wrappers with a color photo portrait by Bangs of actress Emmy Wehlen on the front wrap & a pictorial color ad for Pall Mall cigarettes, lithographed by Brett Litho, on the rear wrap. The wraps are chipped with a few small… stains & with a crease across the bottom corner of the rear wrap. The back strip is perished with large pieces out & the lower half of the wraps are detached. Title, pages [70]-104 & xxviii pages [ads]. Numerous black-and-white illustrations & pictorial ads, including a number of full-page portraits. There are small areas of very light dampstaining to the top corners of the pages. Good. A periodical named "Our Players' Gallery" first appeared in 1900. The title was changed to "Theatre" in 1901, and to "Theatre Magazine" in 1917, under which title it continued publication until April 1931. A splendid source of information on the still developing art of theatre in New York City, the magazine covered all aspects of the stage: interviews with actors and actresses, commentaries by playwrights and critics, highlights of current plays with summaries and photographs, and onstage fashion. The magazine was respected in its time for its contributions from prominent critics and actors.The periodical is beautifully illustrated with elegant portraits and attractive advertisements, many of them for fashion. [Information from the virtual newsstand project of the University of West Florida].The editor of the magazine, Arthur Hornblow [1865-1942 was an English-born playwright and critic who moved to America in 1889. He was a staff member of the Dramatic Mirror and a play reader for A. M. Palmer before editing Theatre from 1901 to 1926. He was the author of "A History of the Theatre in America, from Its Beginnings to the Present Time" [1919].The cover photo of this issue is of Emmy Wehlen in "Marriage a la Carte". There is another full-page photo of Wehlen in this piece with C. Morton Horne in the body of the magazine. Wehlen [1877-1977] was a German-born musical comedy and silent film actress. She began her career in Stuttgart but soon moved to New York and opened in the musical comedy 'Marriage a la Carte" in January 1911. She disappeared from the public eye in her thirties.The title page photo is a splendid shot of Maude Adams in full cock regalia in Rostand's "Chantecleer". There are further pictures of the production in the magazine. Among the articles are 'The Art of Mary Garden" and "A Chat with Julia Marlowe and Susan B. Anthony".

August 1886 in Mannheim als Emmy Louise Weckesser; ? 1977) war eine deutsche Operettensängerin und Schauspielerin. Emmy Wehlen wurde in Mannheim geboren. Dort erh…ielt sie ihre Gesangsausbildung am Mannheimer Konservatorium. Wehlen hatte nach ihrer Ausbildung erste Engagements an Musiktheatern in Stuttgart, Berlin und München. Im Thalia-Theater Berlin trat sie unter anderem zusammen mit dem Humoristen Arnold Rieck auf. Mit Rieck nahm sie auch die Schallplatte Ohne Männer, einem Stück aus der Operette Doktor Klapperstorch, auf. Im Jahr 1909 gelang Wehlen in London der internationale Durchbruch. Sie spielte im Daly?s Theatre unter anderem die Rolle der Sonia in einer englischen Version der Operette Die lustige Witwe von Franz Lehár und die Rolle der ?Olga? in der Operette Die Dollarprinzessin von Leo Fall. Es folgten weitere Auftritte in Musiktheatern in New York und London. 1912 spielte sie neben Mae West in New York in der Operette A Winsome Widow am Loew's New York Theatre. Ihr vorläufig letztes Operettenengagement hatte sie im Jahr 1915 auf dem Broadway am Shubert Theatre. Unmittelbar nach Auslaufen ihres Vertrags am Broadway begann die Filmkarriere von Emmy Wehlen. Filmschauspielerin Emily Wehlen wurde schnell zu einer der Stars der US-amerikanischen Filmproduktions- und Filmvertriebsgesellschaft Metro Pictures Corporation. Parallel zu ihren Filmauftritten trat sie aber auch nach wie vor als Theaterschauspielerin und Operettensängerin in Erscheinung.[2] Im Jahr 1917 spielte sie neben Harry Davenport im Film Sowers and Reapers. Im selben Jahr trat sie neben Louis Wolheim im Film The Belle of the Season in Erscheinung. Im Jahr 1918 erhielt sie neben Joseph Sweeney die Hauptrolle im Film Sylvia on a Spree. 1919 war sie Filmpartnerin von Eugene Pallette im Stummfilm The Amateur Adventuress. Bis 1920 trat sie in 18 Kinofilmen in Erscheinung, wobei sie überwiegend die Hauptrolle spielte. Nach ihrem letzten Film kehrte sie auf die Operettenbühne zurück, beendete aber nach wenigen Jahren ihre Karriere. Emmy Wehlen verschwand danach aus der Öffentlichkeit. Ihr weiteres Schicksal ist bislang nicht bekannt.
