Addressed to 'My dear [Gern?] King / A. G. B. I' (i.e. the Artists' General Benevolent Institution) and signed 'Aston Webb / Presd. A G B I -'. He is writing at the request of 'the Council', 'to express to you on their behalf & my own our sincere regret at your resignation from our Council'. Since he has 'attended so regularly and helped so sympathetically in the work that we shall all miss you very much and look forward to the day when you feel able to the [sic] come back to us and with this in View the Council have decided not to fill up the vacancy with the hope that we shall soon see you amongst us again when you may be sure of a warm welcome'.

See Webb's entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, aged and worn with traces of glue from mount at head. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Rev. A. R. F. Hyslop, M.A. / Warden, / Glenalmond College, PERTHSHIRE.' Following on from previous correspondence, Webb is 'desired to explain' that 'the Board feels strongly the advantage of a training in freehand drawing as a preliminary to architectural training', and that they do not consider 'the geometrical drawing of architecture more particularly from plates' 'generally helpful'. He concludes: 'The suggestion of the Board, I may also remind you, had reference only to the studies of those who are aiming at an architectural career.'.

Frontis, 286pp, 38 b/w illustrations, 9 plans & diagrams. Foreword by The Earl of Plymouth. 4pp folded pamphlet listing the Council and Parliamentary membership and publications of the London Society loosely inserted. 26x20, blue cloth, glt lettering on spine, blind stamp on front. Ex-lib, with presentation plate on fep, couple of stamps and marks, cloth splitting on spine, slightly rubbed, mark on top edge not effecting contents, other edges uncut and slightly browned and rough, good thus. An important early 1920s survey of London problems, with planning proposals. There are texts by Adshead, Unwin, Blomfield, Davison etc. Subjects include roads & streets, bridges, sorting out the East End, parks, housing etc etc. Scarce.

Architect (1880-1939), son of Sir Aston Webb, designer of Admiralty Arch, the Victoria Memorial, etc. All ten items very good. Five docketed and six bearing R.S.A. stamp. All ten signed 'Maurice E. Webb'. An interesting and important correspondence, mainly concerning the renovation of the R.S.A.'s Adelphi building. ITEM ONE (15 May 1924, one page, 12mo): He is writing on behalf of his father, who is 'not yet able to answer his letters himself', 'to thank your Council for the kind expression of sympathy with him in his accident [.] the doctors consider that he is making as good progress as can be expected in the circumstances, but it is a very slow and tedious illness for him'. ITEM TWO (26 June 1924, one page, quarto) is on the same subject. ITEM THREE (8 January 1926, one page, quarto): He has not heard further from Sir Frank Baines, but revises the estimate 'for the work on the lines of the enclosed sketch shewing the arch brought into the centre, which I think probably Sir George Sutton will like to see.' ITEMS FOUR to SEVEN (21 and 25 January, 27 February and 10 June 1926, all one page, 12mo) mainly concern the same subject. (Item seven: 'We cannot find an original Adams' figure, but this is a model by Mr. Walter Gilbert from some Adams' drawings.' [not present]) ITEM EIGHT (19 October 1926, one page, quarto) gives three prices, involving Messrs Dove Brothers, Messrs Jacksons and Messrs Bradford (the last 'very good people'). ITEM NINE (12 November 1926, one page, 12mo): 'As you know on the original drawing on the front of the Royal Society of Arts the title is in Latin | "SOCIETATIS AUTIUM DOMUS" | Shall we use this for the back or put it in English?' ITEM TEN (3 February 1927, one page, 12mo) discusses a meeting with 'the Westminster City Council's Surveyor at the Society of Arts this morning'. See also Aston Webb, #3873.

ONE: ANS to 'Dear Walter Spiers', 27 March 1899. 1p, 16mo. Thanking him for his congratulations on his election. TWO: ALS to 'Dear Mr Baldwin', 20 June 1903. 1p, 12mo. After thanking him for his congratulation he continues: 'We had a most delightful dinner with you the other evening.'.
