Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Edition. First edition - Victor Gollancz Left Book Club edition - 'not for sale to the public.' A study of life and conditions in Russia in the 1930s. With an introduction by Beatrice Webb. ***A very good copy in the standard LBC salmon-pink paper-covered thin boards, with black titles. The covers are quite clean with just some light marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling. There are no significant creases or tears - just some slight fraying at the head of the spine, and slight corner creasing. Corners and edges slightly worn and rubbed. The fragile paper covering is slightly faded on the spine, but the spine is tight with no tears. Some darkening to the top edge of the page block. Internally the book is also very good with no inscriptions. The pages are clean, with none of the usual foxing to the preliminary and last pages. No creases or tears. The paper stock has tanned over the decades due to the cheap paper stock that Victor Gollancz publications were noted for. There is slight splitting at the gutter at the title page, but the binding is holding. No dustwrapper as issued. ***392 pages including a detailed index at the back of the book. 203mm x 138mm. ***Contents: Introduction, Preface. PART I - MUSCOVITES AT HOME - Chapter I. Cub Reporter in Moscow, II. Old Russian Subject--Young Soviet Citizen, III. "The Workers' and Peasants' Inspection for Literature", IV. "In Tiflis the Sun is Warm", V. Train-track Interlude, VI. Proposal by Proxy, VII. Without Benefit of Orange Blossoms, VIII. Happy Family--Worker Style, IX. Home and the "Servant Problem". PART II - PEASANTS AND "COMRADE DIRECTORS" - X. "The Darkest Part of Old Russia", XI. Competition--Capitalist and Socialist, XII. "A Campaign --- Unparalleled in the Peace-time Annals of any Government", XIII. The Biggest Harvest Russia Ever Had, XIV. The Making of a Bolshevik, XV. Culture--By-product of Collectivization, XVI. How Does Your Gardener Grow?, XVII. "A Communist is a Communist only when He Carries Out the Party's Decisions", etc., etc. PART III - CITIZENS--ADMIRABLE AND OTHERWISE. PART IV - JEWS, TARTARS, AND OSSETIANS. PART V - AFTER TWO YEARS - XXXVI. Soviet Citizens--1937, XXXVII. Soviet Citizens--1937 (continued). ***'The author used personal accounts and social experiences to define the wider Soviet national policy. Allan argued that policies and institutions changed rapidly but it was important to determine the individual effects this had on the citizens. She lived in the Soviet Union between 1932 and 1935 and used this time to observe and interview locals to determine what life was like under the regime. The book covers topics such as collectivisation, gender roles and literacy levels. The book is a well written and highly readable account of conversations with ordinary Russians from when the author arrived in Moscow as a journalist and duly left in 1935, looking back from a distance of two years in 1937.' ***'The gifted writer of the following pages disclaims any capacity for abstract reasoning, whether Marxist or anti-Marxist; she even implies that she has no scientific knowledge of social institutions. She writes, so she tells us in her preface, about particular people in particular emergencies; she sketches their past and she gives, in the final chapter, her correspondence with them after she had left the USSR. [Taken from the introduction by Beatrice Webb - Passfield Corner, Liphook, Hants, June 1938i] ***A first edition published by Victor Gollancz in a Left Book Club edition, in very good original condition. These books were mass-produced using quite cheap materials, and few of them have survived in collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
