Weaver worked in the Roosevelt administration from 1933 to 1944 on issues of racial discrimination. In June 1940, President Roosevelt formed the National Defense Advisory Commission and Weaver served as a special administrative assistant on race relations in the labor division. He would later serve in the Kennedy Administration and become the first African-American appointed to a Presidential Cabinet post when he was appointed secretary of Housing and Urban Development by Lyndon B.
