[CULTURAL REVOLUTION [1966-1976] . . * This is a group of six original and authentic "Hong Wei Bing," or "Red Guard" armbands from various provinces. . *** These have yellow-ink silk screened characters on red cotton, cloth, some with a round stamp on the inside or back side, with place, date and institution that issued them to youthful Hong Wei Bing" members. . *** These were issued in several places, each school or place issued them with a very similar style of Chinese characters stating "HONG WEI BING." Some also had slogans about loyalty to Chairman Mao. . *** Not all are exactly the same there was some variance. For example, some have "MAO TSE TUNG ZU SHI" or "CHAIRMAN MAO" above the "HONG WEI BING" characters, show the name of the province above or city name on the back side. Some of show city name i.e.: 'Guilin" or 'Nanning' along with various and different round stamps stating "Hong Wei Bing" and other provincial names, dates and other notes, slogans and the like. . *** There are some individual distinctive other Chinese characters noting place and or a famous slogan relating to respect, loyalty and sincerity to Chairman Mao. The armbands were worn while Red Guards were on the rampage, marches and during chaotic times, attacking 'contra-revolutionary' people, attitudes and actions. . *** XIAO HONG BAO: SMALL RED SHOULDER BAG: . The Hong Wei Bing members often carried and brandished a copy of Chairman Mao's HONG BAO SHU ["Little Red Book"]. . It was a popular item with the "Red Guards" during the "Wenhua Da Geming" ["Cultural Revolution"]. We have a few of these, please inquire. . * The book was published with a red cloth spine over boards, and has 100 pages which = 200 pages/sides in all. . * THE SUBJECT OF THIS DIARY: This diary was made a person who appears to be a "Barefoot Doctor" assigned to a rural location, the last entry is May 16, 1969, per the penned name & date on the last page. . The diary contains medical treatment, exceptionally useful during the chaotic "Cultural Revolution" when "Red Guards" engaged in fights and confrontations of accused landlords, moneylenders, capitalists, and ordinary Chinese who objected to being man-handled. The "Red Guards" were often injured or involved in fist-fights and other confrontations which caused them injury. . This diary/notebook was made to teach its author how to treat injured fellow "Red Guards." . It was also an early form of "Barefoot Doctors." That is to say amateur medical providers who treated 'ad-hoc' injuries as well as useful to those young "Red Guards" who went into the countryside to treat peasants who had no access to any medical parishioners. . *** SUBJECT: CONTINUED: . [CULTURAL REVOLUTION [1966-1976] . . * This is a group of six early original and authentic "Hong Wei Bing," or "Red Guard" armbands from various provinces. These early examples are from ca. 1966-1967 period . *** These have yellow-ink silk screened characters on red cotton, cloth, some with a round stamp on the inside or back side, with place, date and institution that issued them to youthful Hong Wei Bing" members. . *** These were issued in several places, each school or place issued them with a very similar style of Chinese characters stating "HONG WEI BING." Some also had slogans about loyalty to Chairman Mao. . *** Not all are exactly the same there was some variance. For example, some have "MAO TSE TUNG ZHU XI" or "CHAIRMAN MAO" above the "HONG WEI BING" characters, show the name of the province above or city name on the back side. Some of show city name i.e.: 'Guilin" or 'Nanning' along with various and different round stamps stating "Hong Wei Bing" and other provincial names, dates and other notes, slogans and the like. . *** There are some individual distinctive other Chinese characters noting place and or a famous slogan relating to respect, loyalty and sincerity to Chairman Mao. A group of sixteen Red guard members, 9.7 x 7.5 cm., nicely posed before a brick building. Eleven of the people wear old army uniforms and "Mao" caps. The boy at the far right, upper row wears a small pin on his left chest. All of the people in the front row wear the same kind of 1960's type of canvas low-cut tennis shoes. . b. A group of four people; three men wear old army uniforms and "Mao" hats one with a red star. The two boys in the foreground at the bottom are Hong Wei Bing or Chinese red guards. The older man and woman at the top could be the parents of the young men. The size is 6.1 x 5.8 cm. . c. Shows a young woman, carrying a woven basket, with a long white scarf around her neck, the Chinese characters are not legible, she wears an old army jacket and trousers, she is a Hong Wei Bing, or Red Chinese guard girl. Shows four young mean three of which are in old army uniforms and are Hong Wei Bing, or Red Chinese guards, the fourth young man is a P.L.A. military man, wearing a "Mao" cap with a large red star, and collar rank badges. This photo is 5.5 x 4 cm. . *** THE USE OF OLD MILITARY BY HONG WEI BING: In order to look like a military group, the "Hong Wei Bing" Chinese ["Red Guards"] quickly adopted and used old army uniforms found at home, used by their parents. . These khaki or olive drab cotton uniforms had standardized dark brown buttons, a high color, pocket covers with the "tear drop" design. These were commonly used during World War II, and later during the Korean War [1950-1952]. . The young Red Guards quickly began to wear these old military uniforms as a patriotic symbol and display of a military look. But more and importantly, because a large number of the earliest Hong Wei Bing were just Middle or High school students, they liked to wear old military uniforms to make them look older. For that reason, the Red Guards wore two kinds of clothing; first choice was old family military uniforms. Those who could not find any old military uniforms, simply wore street clothes. The dress of early Hong Wei Bing members were commonly found in early photographs wearing both examples. . *** THE BEGINNING OF THE "CULTURAL REVOLUTION" or "WENHUA DA GEMING." . Mao expressed personal approval and support for the Red Guards in a letter to Tsinghua University Red Guards on 1 August 1966. He gave the movement a more public boost at a massive rally on 18 August at Tiananmen Square. Mao appeared atop Tiananmen wearing an olive green military uniform, the type favored by Red Guards, but which he had not worn in many years. He personally greeted 1,500 Red Guards and waved to 800,000 Red Guards and onlookers below. The rally was led by Chen Boda, and Lin Biao gave a keynote speech. Red Guard leaders led by Nie Yuanzi also gave speeches. A high school Red Guard put a red arm band inscribed with the characters for "Red Guard" on the Chairman, who stood for six hours. The 8-18 rally, as it was known, was the first of eight receptions the Chairman gave to Red Guards in Tiananmen in the fall of 1966. It was this rally that signified the beginning of the Red Guards' involvement in implementing the aims of the Cultural Revolution. The second rally, held on 31 August, was led by Kang Sheng and Lin Biao also donned a red arm band. The last rally was held on 26 November 1966. The writer shows his respect for Mao's words, slogans & idealism, and the writers eagerness to participate in the "WEN HUA DA GEMING"["GREAT PROLETARIAN CULTURAL EVOLUTION."] . The notebook is full of hand-penned poems about the "Wenhua Da Geming" and also Chairman Mao. . The texts are written in very neat and orderly format, on nearly every page in fountain pen blue ink Hanzi [Chinese characters]. . This kind of "Hong Wei Bing" blank note book was published in Beijing, July, 1967, with 100 sheets = 200 pages in all. It was a popular item with the Red Guards, where they wrote instructions for mass rallies, street marches and protests. The texts also reflect the eagerness and willingness to join others in protesting against landlords, and other educators and business owners [capitalists] and anyone that resisted the revolution. . This flag was made and issued by "Red Guards" in Nanning, Guangxi province, commonly known as a 'hot bed' of "Cultural Revolutionary" & "Red Guard" activities. . Tens of thousands of "Red Guards" were gunned down by the P.L.A. [People's Liberation Army] in April 1967 when anarchy ruled the streets. The P.L.A. was instructed by Chairman Mao and Marshal Lin to end the Cultural Revolution. Some factions refused to comply with this official order. Marshall Lin put a forceful end to the Red Guards" to continue to wage chaos throughout the country. It took nearly two more years before the Red Guards disbanded and order prevailed. . Red Guards destroyed historical relics and artifacts and ransacked cultural and religious sites. The uniform is complete and consists of all original, period clothing worn by the "HONG WEI BING" ["RED GUARDS"] during the "WENHUA DA GE MING' ["CULTURAL REVOLUTION."] . . ORIGIN OF THE OLIVE GREEN ARMY "MAO" UNIFORM: . Olive green "Mao" army uniform: jacket, pants, belt & cap and red "Hong Wei Bing" [Red Guard"] arm band. . The exact same type, style and color of the uniform Chairman Mao wore on August 18, 1966, when he greeted the historic first mass rally of "HONG WEI BING" ["RED GUARDS"] in Beijing at Tiananmen Square. Chairman Mao's wearing of his old army uniform inspired the youthful "HONG WEI BING" students to follow his lead.
