When at Heywood Hill's bookshop John Saumarez Smith came across a copy of the original edition of Notes and Ideas "printed in an unedited form on the vice-regal press [in Delhi] and limited to probably no more than twenty or thirty copies", he was keen to do a reprint. Refused permission by Wavell's family, he tells the story in The Book Collector (Summer 2016), he undertook an informal one, photocopied from the original and in plain wrappers, to be issued in "a handful of facsimile copies" for private circulation. "If you buy an expensive thing you will regret it once; if you buy a cheap thing you will regret it always. (Indian proverb)".
