Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record.In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Estleman (born September 15, 1952, in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is an American writer o…f detective and Western fiction. He is known for a series of crime novels featuring the investigator Amos Walker. Estleman graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1974 with a BA in English and journalism. His non-series works include Bloody Season, a fictional recreation of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and several novels and stories featuring Sherlock Holmes, as well as contributions to several books on how to write and sell stories and novels. Estleman's literary works have been recognized and highlighted by Michigan State University in their Michigan Writers Series. THE ADVENTURES OF THE SANGUINARY COUNT: The year is 1890. The novel is an account of Holmes' adventure facing off against Bram Stoker's Dracula and is presented as a revision of the Stoker novel, albeit with Sherlock Holmes present in the narrative. The book has since been republished by I-Books and Titan Books, the latter under their Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes banner. British Fantasy Society called the book "one of the better" Dracula/Holmes crossovers. Estleman's novel was adapted for BBC Radio in 1981.[ It has since been rebroadcast numerous times. Stuart-Wortley and cookery by George Saintbury. Subjects include; Natural history - the partridge at home and abroad, in the fields, courtship, nests, partridges as pets, colours, poaching. This series of monographs, by the most experienced sportsmen of the day, are still of immense value as the most detailed and comprehensive works ever published on the British game species. The series was renamed "The Fur, Feather and Fin Series" part way through publication when it was decided to include volumes on Salmon, Trout, and Pike and Perch. .
